Defensive errors were Reading's downfall as they were beaten at Birmingham despite having most of the game. Reading were the strongest side for long periods but ended up on the wrong side of a 3-2 scoreline after going three goals behind in the opening 36 minutes. The Royals attempted to get back into the game but Reading's two goals came too late to enable them to take anything from the game. Reading were a goal down after just 63 seconds when Loum attempted to prevent a cross but instead effectively provided the assist for Deeney to open the scoring. On 23 minutes Deeney clearly played for the penalty which he then scored from the spot. The next gift came ten minutes before half time and sealed the win for the home side before half time. Mbengue's mistake opened up the chance for Chong to score.
In the second half Reading's defensive frailities were still on display and Birmingham could have increased their lead despite the Royals having more possession and looking the more positive team. Reading did deserve to score though and it was substitute Carroll that provided the goal with Joao scoring from close in. Ince somehow scored deep in injury time with an effort through a crowd of defenders that found the back of the net - but there was no time to find an equaliser.
