Summer Changes Are Afoot For Reading After Promotion Disappointment
20 April 2026
By Hob Nob Anyone?
As we edge ever closer to the month of May, it seems that Reading will now miss out on a late promotion attempt via the Wembley Play Off route, as four League One defeats in the last six matches appear to have cost us dear.
With 44 games played in the domestic 2025/26 campaign, the Royals are sat in tenth place in the third tier table with 62 points, but given sixth placed Stevenage are on 68 points and are one of the teams above us that have a game in hand, it would take a remarkable turn of events now for manager Leam Richardson's first team squad to earn back to back victories (after three straight defeats) and for four other teams to lose their remaining games and not get to 69 points.
Having fallen away at almost the last hurdle, it has become another hugely frustrating and disappointing time for the Madejski Stadium faithful, but the club continues to look forward and build for a much brighter future where fan can use Hellotickets Premier League weekend tickets services for their football fix and that is what fans have to remember and hold on to. It just feels more galling right due to the simple fact that games against Lincoln City and Cardiff City have both seen celebrations as their promotions were confirmed as we slipped further away.
As we look to the future though, it has now been confirmed that we plan to introduce a safe standing section at the ground ahead of the coming campaign and work should be fully completed during the summer off season in readiness for the big new kick off. The plans to replace 1000 seats with a standing area in the South Stand are part of wider major renovations that are planned for our home, and co-chief executive Joe Jacobson remains hopeful that this change will instantly improve and create a better atmosphere moving forward for home matches - a new PA system and pitch are also both on the cards.
These plans were obviously slated to take place irrespective of what ultimately happened in our promotion chase for a return to the Championship, but if it has the desired effect on the noise of the home faithful next season then there is the chance that it could play a telling part in helping us to go one step further at the next time of asking in the 2026/27 season.
With the other changes that are planned, the club are also hopeful that they will soon be able to tap in to other more diverse events at the stadium. Whilst those details are still being worked on, finalised and will hopefully be announced in due course, it is pretty obvious that greater use of our facilities on non-match days would obviously be an additional, and lucrative, revenue stream that would further help and support the club as we look for far more solid financial foundations that enable us to better invest in the squad to achieve the success that we all want.
Fans just have to hope that the steps that we have taken this year, both on and off the pitch, continue with greater pace in the calendar year to come.
Another Team Promoted At Reading
18 April 2026
By Hob Nob Anyone?
Reading's dismal end to the season continued with a defeat which finished off any lingering hopes of reaching the playoffs for another season. Four defeats, a draw and only one win in the past six game is relegation form from a team until recently seemed well-placed to make a late challenge for a place in the play-offs.
Second placed Cardiff, probably feeling the burden of expectation, started the game cautiously. Even their huge contingent of usually vociferous fans seemed slightly subdued. Reading were getting forward and finding space in the City half. A couple of promising situations came to nothing due to poor decision-making and hesitancy in possession. Dorsett came close to giving Reading the lead with a header which struck the post. Kyerewaa was particularly guilty of indecision around the edge of the box and consequently failed to test Trott. City were certainly not playing with a confidence expected by a team looking to secure promotion.

Season Over After Defeat At Doncaster
11 April 2026
By Hob Nob Anyone?
Reading's season was effectively ended this weekend with a 0-1 away defeat at Doncaster Rovers. The result leaves the Royals in ninth place in the League One table and ended hopes of a play-off place. Reading are five points outside the top six but crucially they have played two more games than sixth placed Stevenage and three more than fifth placed Stockport. With just three games left to play even three staight wins will not be enough to see Reading climb into the top six - and three straight wins seems a very unlikely outcome with games left against second placed Cardiff City, Rotherham and Blackpool.
A single second half goal was enough for Doncaster to take the full three points and condemn Reading to another season in League One. In a game with few chances the scrappy 58th minute goal was the difference after with Reading struggled to create any meaningful chances as the game drifted away. Reading's first shot on target was registered with 12 minutes left to play. Despite picking up points to pull Reading into play-off contention for a while, Leam Richardson has failed to impress and has not improved performances seen under Noel Hunt. Reading have won just twice in the last eight games at a crucial stage of the season.

Play-Off Hopes Fade After Late Defeat
06 April 2026
By Hob Nob Anyone?
For the second time in four days Reading demonstrated a vulnerability to concede late goals and it has probably denied an injury-stricken squad a shot at gaining an unlikely promotion through the play offs.
On Thursday two points were dropped away to Huddersfield after conceding a stoppage time equaliser. Today having appeared to have clawed back a point with a magnificent late equaliser from Wing, they fell apart defensively six minutes into stoppage time, allowing Moylan a clear run at Pereira to secure a victory which earned Lincoln (deservedly) automatic promotion to the Championship.

Navigating the Rebuild and the Road to Stability
02 April 2026
By Hob Nob Anyone?
It’s been a long road from the dark days of 1994 when we first started this site at the University of East Anglia. Back then, we were just happy to have a digital presence; today, we’re navigating the complex reality of life in League One under the Redwood Holdings era. With the "Stop Notice" on the Select Car Leasing Stadium long cleared and Rob Couhig’s group providing much-needed off-field calm, the focus for every Reading fan is how we get back to where we belong. It’s about more than just results; it’s about rebuilding a club that nearly lost its soul.
Stability at the Top
The most significant shift for Reading has been the move toward financial transparency. Since the takeover in May 2025, the club has focused on "sustainability"—a word that once caused dread but now represents a shield against further points deductions. Rob Couhig recently moved to dismiss rumors regarding the sale of the Bearwood Park training ground, reassuring the North Stand faithful that the academy remains the heart of the club's identity. This commitment to infrastructure is a vital cornerstone for any "rebuild" worthy of the name.
Tactics and the Play-Off Chase
Leam Richardson has adopted a pragmatic approach on the field. The Royals’ 1-0 defeat at Stevenage this past Saturday was a frustrating setback, dropping us to eighth in the table. However, the general trend remains positive. We sit just one point behind Plymouth and two behind Stevenage with seven games to go. While the defensive shift under Richardson has made us harder to beat, the fans are rightly calling for more clinical finishing in the final third if we are to break into those top six spots by May.
The Bearwood Production Line
Our Category One academy continues to be the envy of League One. With players like Kelvin Ehibhatiomhan and Tyler Sackey becoming first-team fixtures, the rebuild is being fueled by homegrown talent. Even in defeat, the Under-21s’ spirited performance against Manchester United on Friday night showed that the pipeline is far from dry. This reliance on youth isn’t just a cost-cutting measure; it’s about reconnecting the club with its roots and ensuring the "Reading Way" survives.
Modernizing the Matchday Experience
In 2026, football is more than simply the 90 minutes. Fans now want a smooth mix of real-life and digital interaction. This shift is being led by major global moves, such as the FIFA-TikTok partnership, which has redefined how supporters consume matchday content through real-time, short-form engagement. Industry research from Disguise and Zipdo shows that 89% of fans are more inclined to return to a venue if they receive a tailored digital experience. Reading is leaning into this trend by partnering with infrastructure specialists to improve stadium-wide connectivity and adding real-time data overlays to the official club app.
The digital shift at RG2 mirrors how we consume entertainment across the board in 2026. Whether fans are engaging with FIFA’s latest interactive streams or checking live scores on NewsNow, the demand for responsive digital hubs is at an all-time high. By observing how high-traffic platforms like Jackpot City manage complex user loyalty and secure data encryption, the Royals are looking to make the Select Car Leasing Stadium a gold standard for the 365-day fan experience.
Community and the Future of the Royals
The Reading FC Community Trust recently revealed a strategy highlighting a staggering £16.9 million in annual social value. Through initiatives like mental health walking football and the permanent "Education Hub," the club is stitching itself back into the town's DNA. Furthermore, the planned pitch restoration for the summer shows that the board is building from the ground up. Stability isn't just a buzzword at RG2 anymore—it’s the new reality.
