Vote For Player Of The Season
09 April 2026
By Hob Nob Anyone?
With the 2025/2026 season coming to a close it's time to vote for your player of the season. The Royals look set for a finish just outside the play-off positions, but with four games to play have a very slim chance of sneaking into the top six should they pick up maximum points. I went with Derrick Williams due to the level of impact he has on our defence. He reads the game well; leads the defence well; good in the air; powerful; fairly comfortable on the ball. I think we've only lost four times when he's started (and two were in back-to-back games). I hadn't realised he'd missed so many games though, which is really the key mark against him.
Will probably be Marriott getting the official award; Wing second. Goals and assists get attention (spectacular saves for keepers), but Derrick does a lot of the intangibles well; and completely changes the team in a way I don't think anyone else does (perhaps Wing).

Frankly not sure any player this season has played well enough to justify a vote. Very inconsistent performances and too many injuries preventing momentum.
Wing will win as he has scored a few, but he has been a shadow of the Wing of last season. Marriott would probably have won if he had played all season.

Wonder if Reading be considering any for a move in the summer, after all the club’s AI data reporting should be highlighting many as a matter of course.
In a similar vein, the top players, stats wise, in L2 are…
Top scorers
Aaron Drinan (Swind*n) 21
Isaac Hutchinson (Cheltenham) 16
Michael Cheek (Bromley) 16
Top assists
Tommi O’Reilly (Crewe) 11
Liam Mandeville (Chesterfield) 10
Mitchell Pinnock (Bromley) 9

Marriott for me; his goals got us up to the fringes of the play offs and had he not got injured, we would have been much more likely to have finished in the top 6.
A key issue for the Summer to indicate the genuine ambition of the club will be whether they succumb to the inevitable offers that will come in for him.

Highly unlikely that any offers will come in for Marriot. His injury issues are well known in the industry and he will only be available for 50% of matches over a season. Having him as first choice striker leaves you at risk of coming up short in terms of goals and therefore having a massive effect on your league position. As a back up option, then yes maybe someone would like him. But, he is going to want the sort of wage warranted by a first choice player. Our season was effectively bookended by Marriot fitness. He was absent at the start, costing Noel his job, and absent at the end.

Another key issue is whether they try to sign adequate cover for him in the event of injury, If we had two interchangeable strikers of the same quality who didn't get injured at the same time we'd be in the playoffs for sure.
You don’t think Kelvin da man? :o
He isn't at the same level yet and I'd feel more comfortable if we had another Jack Marriott or a Simon Church in the squad to give us cover and options because you ideally need one striker starting and a second one to bring off the bench.

Perhaps Patton and/or Evans could be decent but it’s still too early to know. Would agree the club should look for a bargain to be had in that area and, of course, Mick Gooding says you can never have too many centre forwards🤪
There has been speculation that Josh Stones (York) is on the radar…..
