Royals Back In League Action

Reading return to league action this weekend as they travel to Watford in the Championship. Reading were busy getting knocked out of the FA Cup away at Brighton last weekend. The 0-1 defeat completed their cup action for the season with the record of played two, lost two, scored zero and conceded seven. It wouldn't be so bad if the league form could compensate. But in the Championship we've collected 4 points from the last possible 18. We haven't scored more than a goal in a game since November 2013. According to manager Nigel Adkins, speaking this week, we remain "on track" for the play-offs - although he now admits that Reading might struggle with automatic promotion back to the Premier League.

Watford will be hoping for a league victory that will take them to just two points behind the Royals, and with a game a hand. While Reading fully expect to emerge from the January transfer window with a slimmer squad and almost certainly one less goalkeeper, Watford have already confirmed the signing of two new half decent players. One of these new players, German midfielder Alexander Merkel, could make his debut against the Royals. Games between Watford and Reading aren't normally classics, but this follows the entertaining 3-3 draw at the Madejski Stadium earlier this season. If Reading can improve on that then we'll remain in reach, or even in, the play-offs. Realistically Reading might settle for another 0-0 bore draw.
