With the flurry of activity in the summer transfer window, expectations were raised, and a good crowd turned up for the first home game of the season. After the pre match appearance of the shareholders on the pitch, and a rambling speech on their behalf, which was drowned out by noise from the huge contingent of travelling fans, the real business of the afternoon got under way. It proved, as often it does on such occasions, to be an anti-climax. In an uneventful afternoon Reading never looked like conceding or scoring. Managers will always talk about positives, and Reading did look rock solid in defence, but in terms of entertainment it was disappointing afternoon. It is far too early to judge how well the current group of players will shape up over the season. There is certainly a strong foundation upon which to build but sooner or later the Royals are going to find the back of the net with greater frequency to stand any chance of a top six finish.
