The Real Sandhurst Royal Worst keeping error by an RFC keeper since I have been supporting Reading.

Basics...it is clear in front of me YES, kick the ball or NO, hold onto the ball!!

It was clear when he spotted that the ball to Kebe was on and Jem was behind him. If Jem hadn't been staring at the ground as he ran in front of Feds then all might have been ok. Obviously he knows that Feds often does the low torpedo clearances and should have been aware of what Feds was up to. Having said that, Feds should have been more aware of what Jem was doing.

"I wouldn't say it was a mistake because it was probably going to go to Jimmy's feet.

"I was a little bit unlucky, but that's how things go. Sometimes you get them and sometimes you don't. I have done it a million times, but unfortunately someone got in the way and it was unlucky"

Comments like this really annoy me, I understand it is very difficult to assess the validity of media comments, but Fed always has a hint of arrogance when he talks to the media.

When he messed up against Palace, he was complaining that no one was blocking shots. Feds is our number 1 but I think in a short period of time he has made too many big mistakes. You can allow for an odd mistake but he has cost us far too many goals.

Give one of the promosing yougsters a chance.

I heard those comments on Radio Berkshire on the way home and he sounded anything but the apologetic and humble keeper McD made out in his interview.

I know he's an Aussie so you have to expect him to be a bit of a twat but he needs to sort himself out a bit really. As I've said for the last couple of years, he's a decent enough shot stopper but his gaffs are all to common and I don't think he's good enough.

One thing that always winds me up is the 'when a keeper makes a mistake they get punished for it' excuse. Frankly that's rubbish. A lot of their mistakes go totally unnoticed and unpunished and with Federici some of his even get praised because his poor positioning means he ends up making what looks like a decent save (instead of the more regulation and less spectacular one a better keeper would've been making).

I've not seen enough of the other 3 keepers but I think we're probably stuck with Federici for the rest of the season.

Re Fed's error. The rest of the team know that a quick release from him is an important part of his game. The other players should be aware that he will look to clear upfield quickly and make it their business to be aware of what is going on around them. Sure, Fed should take some blame but Karacan should also shoulder some of the responsibility. And I am only going on what I have seen on tv and read as I was not at the game.

Federici costs us over 10 points a season, so why didn't we get rid of him instead of a striker who reached double figures last year?

Madejski out.

I like Feds, and i'd especially like him to save up some classic moments for the 6th November, after that, drop him.

Sorry, I've got to ask how long you've been supporting Reading? Phil Whitehead at home to Oxford United sticks in my mind. Tried to keep the ball in play (I don't think it was even a corner, I think it was a goal kick?) by sliding to ball on wet turf. Unfortunately, he slid too far and plonked the ball on the six yard line, before skidding towards the North Stand advertising boards.

A very grateful Oxford player then tucked it home. Thankfully, Tony Rougier, with a little help from God, sorted everything out.

Feds' incredibile distribution sets him apart from the likes of my favourite Hahneman.

Question for stattos:

How many goals were in some way attributable to Feds' fantastic and quick thinking distribution?

Question for everyone:

This is easy to fix. Would you rather he forgets the quick passes and does simple rollouts (or balloons it into touch like Hahneman)?

What has Federici done consistently for us that warrants the "top keeper" comments? The only thing he's been consistent at is being decidedly average. I'm afraid he's very over-rated and if we can make half a million on him before the transfer window closes, we should take it and give Anderson or Hamer an opportunity. Give either of them a chance to bed in and they certainly wont do any worse.

I can remember more than a few goals we scored when Hahnemann pulled off a crucial save to then send us down the other end to nick a goal.

Federici's distribution is better than Hahnemanns was, but not by the distance many would have you believe.

Hardly any goals in fact, he overhits most of these ingenius 'quick passes'. I'd rather he kept routine goals out rather than doing everything for the cameras and ultimately costing us...actually I'd just rather McCarthy or Hamer were given a chance as Federici's had so many.

Hoop Blah One thing that always winds me up is the 'when a keeper makes a mistake they get punished for it' excuse. Frankly that's rubbish. A lot of their mistakes go totally unnoticed and unpunished....

the Evening Post, quoting Federici "My kicking was blocked quite a few times last season so I have to be a bit cleverer about how we do it and how we put our strikers on the front foot. Everyone is aware of it now."

“I will be all right, I have dealt with things like this before. It’s not the first time one of those has been blocked, but it is the first time someone has scored from it so I have to be smarter.”

Nice to see he's been learning from his mistakes, and just proves my point that keepers get away with plenty of errors through a game as opposed to this mythical 'punished every time' rubbish.

Fair enough.

All opinions heard and all valid of course.

The point of this thread was to boost Feds' morale but it's been take the wrong way.

I trust Feds bears in mind that it's easier to criticise and point out obvious mistakes than it is to encourage and praise and that this thread cannot be indicative of the mood of fans in general.

In the words of Mick Gooding Feds is a "fantasic keeper" and whilst fans may pat themselves on the back for gleefully pointing out errors that a 2 year old would've picked up, few if any have the expertise the likes of Gooding/ McDermott etc do, who see the other side of what makes a good keeper.

Perhaps this is a message then to Feds to carry on doing the good work but not trying anything fancy or dangerous if he wants to keep his rightful place ahead of young ones.

Not having a steady defence in front of him all season of course doesn't help but that's not in his hands.

Im confident that a bit of tightening up and playing it safe will help us focus on his many positives instead. I'm sure McD will have the necessary chats with him (as well as sort out a steady defence to support him!)

Keep up the good work Federici!
