Snowball Or start your own stats threads (they will clearly be MUCH better)

and, OBVIOUSLY, people will flock to that "much better" stats thread

LOL. The argument of a 5 year old.

Snowball Why not have a stats thread which is separate

and another thread for the sensible, deeply-motivated constructive bloke
and other critics/moaners/WUMS to post as much and as often as they like about it?

Just separate the stats themselves

Or start your own stats threads (they will clearly be MUCH better)

and, OBVIOUSLY, people will flock to that "much better" stats thread

and this one will die on the vine

So basically you want your own thread that no one else can post on and that only contains stats? That isn't what a discussion forum is for.

Explain, Sir. Why is that a childish argument?

I would say it's a very reasonable adult suggestion.

I believe my stats, even with flaws, are of real interest to the majority here
but the threads are contaminated, sullied by the constant barracking.

Surely, those who dislike my version of statting, can clearly do better?

And surely, if they did, their threads would be well-supported and my "useless" ones not?

Ignoring yet another insult. No, the reason is that the too-regular arguments
make the stats thread unmanageable. By all means argue just as much or ten
times as much "next door" but allow those who would actually like to READ
the stats (without contamination) the opportunity to do so.

Unless, of course the plan is to screw up the stats thread in order to kill it?

cmonurz
Snowball
Terminal Boardom This is either for Strap or Snowball.

What with 6 wins on the spin, what have been the best winning runs in the second tier and what was the final league position? I think the best we had was 10 in 2005/06 and we all know what happened then.

Strap

But cmonurz says we had 13 not too long ago

Cmonurz is right.

One for strap to confirm as Snowball is a relative newbie to RFC, but Reading’s 13 wins in a row to start the 85/86 (?) season is a football league record. I don’t know if we’ve beaten it with another run mid-season, but I’d doubt it, we’re Reading, not Barca.

Cmonurz is not right.

As has already been pointed out, 13 wins in a row was acheived in the 3rd tier. The OP refers to "best winning runs in the second tier".

Bringing it back to Football

It's impossible to call

MS, think like this. Let's say, for simplicity that RFC, Saints, WHU
roughly match each other's ppg for the next six (WHU+RFC) and five (Saints) games
(say at 2 ppg)... and we'll "give" WHU and RFC a win in their Game in Hand

1 39 +33 77 West Ham
2 39 +40 75 Southampton
3 39 +27 73 Reading

So, if WHU and Saints manage 2 ppg (quite possible, altho' not probable that both will)

We go into the WHU game (7 games to go) virtually "having to win" and even if we did
win, say, 2-0 and Saints won that same day?

1 40 +42 78 Southampton
2 40 +31 77 West Ham
3 40 +29 76 Reading

If we LOST at WHU, all the other averages as given, we'd be 7 points behind with six to play
virtually impossible to make up.

1 40 +35 80 West Ham
2 40 +42 78 Southampton
3 40 +25 73 Reading

That is, of course, presuming we WIN at Doncaster!!

So no bones about it, we have to win at Doncaster and we have to gain points on WHU and Saints
in the next (other) 5 games. It's a very, VERY tall order. They have room to slip up. We do not.

The most sensible "bet" now is that we will finish 3rd, clear of the pack and be "favourites"
to win the POs (which are really a lottery)

Of course we COULD win at West Ham, Saints, Brighton, Birmingham but that would be miraculous.

Therefore, IMO, we have to win our next six games, up to 12 straight wins to have a shot

I think the table would be roughly (but we could get luckier and the others don't manage 2 ppg)

3 39 +33 78 Reading
1 39 +33 77 West Ham
2 39 +40 75 Southampton

IMO, even if we win 5 and draw 1 of the next six, it will be very tough unless we can win
at either Saints or West Ham. I'd rather go to those grounds thinking a draw is enough

Bringing it Back to Football

Southampton were VERY lucky at Leeds.

You can't give away chances like that every game without, some day, getting a 3-0 thumping

But they have by FAR the easiest run-in and will probably be champions

We have to hope they slip up somewhere (maybe tonight versus Ipswich?)

H Ipswich Very good chance of a win, tho' Ipswich improving 5 wins out of 6

H Barnsley Good chance of another win

A Millwall Very good chance of an away win

A Hull City Possible loss, but once Hull think the POs are too far off?

H Doncaster Should be 4-0 win

A Blackpool Blackpool are Jekyll & Hyde but Saints could lose here

H Portsmouth Should be a big win, but it is a derby Match, so...

A Crystal Palace Tough to win there, could lose

H Reading I think (ATM) that Saints will win this

A Peterborough Toughie but Saints could win

A Middlesbrough No win guaranteed at Boro

H Coventry Big win, but Coventry may need a result to stay up

Snowball
Wycombe Royal So basically you want your own thread that no one else can post on and that only contains stats? That isn't what a discussion forum is for.

No. Not at all. The two threads could be pinned right next to each other

One thread has the main, regular stats, the adjacent thread discusses them.

Just like right now There's the Tilehurst End (separate blog) and discussion here OF that blog

The difference would be that those trying to FIND the stats could do so.

Right now they have to wade through a sea of vitriol to find any stats

The TIlehurst End is a seperate website/blog which has a topic pinned on the team board (only one topic, not two). So in that case why don't you go and create your own stats website where you can put a load of stats, articles, etc which you can moderate your self and have a topic pinned on the team board (if Graham allows it)that discusses what is on there.

No one is stopping you doing that. What you won't get is two topics on here.

Bringing it Back to Football

(and also trying to bring the stats back together as it's murder finding them)

Penalties

Reading play in the Championship and have done for the last 3.7 Seasons

So let's find a stat that is for that exact period, and, of course, in the Championship

You couldn't argue with that, could you? Later I'll try to find more penalty statistics for 2000-2001 through to 2005/6

Here We Are... (Bringing this towards the thread end for easy updating

ALL Championship Penalties, August 2006 - March 1st 2012 (5.7 Years, 5.7 Seasons)

Pen-Gol-Miss-%
070 054 16 0.77 2011-12
157 138 19 0.88 2010-11
124 103 21 0.83 2009-10
142 113 29 0.80 2008-09
105 097 08 0.92 2007-08
040 035 05 0.88 2006-07

638 540 098 85% OVERALL (5 Seasons plus 33 Games)
568 486 082 86% OVERALL (for the 5 Full Seasons before this one)

2007-08 = 92% Scored
2006-07 = 88% Scored
2010-11 = 88% Scored
2009-10 = 83% Scored
2008-09 = 80% Scored

and this season, so far, 77%, will keep table updated.

(Perhaps a higher percentage of pens go in in the last third of the season?)
