Defender heads to Abbey Stadium until January
Reading defender Sean Long has joined Sky Bet League 2 outfit Cambridge United on a loan stint which will keep him at the Abbey Stadium until 3rd January 2017.

The Republic of Ireland Under-21 international becomes the latest addition to Sean Derry’s squad, who kick off their league campaign with a home meeting against Barnet in nine days’ time.

Full-back Long, who has one substitute appearance for the Royals’ first team under his belt, could feature in as many as 24 fixtures in League 2 before the expiration of his loan – including a home game against Luton in the opening month.

After his stint on loan with the Hatters last season, the Dubliner also represented Braintree for the final 11 fixtures of last season, and helped the Essex club to a remarkable third-place finish in the National League… he ultimately missed out on a trip to Wembley after a play-off semi defeat to Grimsby over two legs.

And, by coincidence, Sean links up with his new teammates ahead of their final pre-season fixture on Saturday – he will occupy the away dressing room at Cressing Road for a game against former side Braintree.

Good luck to Sweeney. He never gave less than his all for us but I didn't think he was a good enough footballer for the Championship. Dropping down a bit I think he will be a very effective player and hope he does well there.

Longy has always impressed me when I've watched him. Hopefully he'll do well at Cambridge and next summer push for a place in the first team.

Unfortunately i think that Long isn't going to make it at reading, he has not been near the first team and been on loan to three very low level teams, also Tennai Watson at 19 seems to be closer to the first team than he ever has been.

Tend to agree with Slater. Long is very much in the Sweeney bracket. Steady performer, never lacks effort but nothing about him that suggests he's a Championship or higher player.
These players may be late developers and in a couple of years come back and rise up the divisions again. It doesn't happen often though....

Not good enough at Swindon, looked completely out his depth against a poor L1 outfit.

L2/L1 the highest level for him.

Yeah I don't rate Long either, I've seen him have one or two good games but a lot of disappointing ones.

Keown, Watson and Akinwumni are the right backs to watch.

These players may be late developers and in a couple of years come back and rise up the divisions again. It doesn't happen often though....

Not seen huge amounts of him, but neither he nor Griffin ever gave me much reason to think they'd really play above League One or Two much.As you say though, plenty of players just need regular games in a lower league to be able to make a step up in the mid to late 20s though.

Nameless and SCIAG are very positive about lots of the young players they've seen... me too, though I wouldn't claim to be as knowledgeable as them. They hardly criticise everyone regardless.

Long is not good enough, there is no point flogging a dead horse. He is 21, you can't call him young anymore. He should be progressed a lot further than he is.

Yeah fair enough, it was more of a general comment about how negative this board can be. Having said that - why did the club keep him on? Just to make sure they get some money when he goes to a L2 club? Or do they think he still has some potential.

I would argue that all but Keown have progressed a lot further than him.. Having already spent time out on loan and been in and around the first team a lot more.

"Winger seals season-long stay in Portugal
Peruvian midfielder Paolo Hurtado last night completed the paperwork on a season-long loan switch to Portuguese side Vitória de Guimarães.

Hurtado joined the Royals from Paços de Ferreira last summer but made just five substitute appearances for Reading in the Sky Bet Championship before sealing a loan move to the Primeira Liga in January.

The 26-year-old started just once for the Royals last season, featuring in our League Cup defeat to Everton at Madejski Stadium.

Paolo was given permission to play a part in a pre-season friendly against Porto at the weekend and he will now begin the Primeira Liga season with Vitória who, after a mid-table finish in the Portuguese top tier last season, will kick off their 2016-17 campaign against Braga on Sunday 14th August.

We would like to wish Paolo our very best wishes during his loan spell with Vitória.

Meanwhile, two of our promising young goalkeepers who have come through our Academy ranks are set to start loan stints with non-league sides this month.

Lewis Ward about to begin a loan spell at Margate, a move that will see him compete in the National League South until 3rd January 2017. The Kent-based side begin their season, under the managerial guidance of former Aldershot and Wycombe stopper Nikki Bull, at home to Bath City this Saturday.

And George Legg will spend this season on loan with Hungerford Town, putting pen to paper on a loan switch that keeps him at Bullpit Lane until 29th April 2017. Legg and his new teammates will begin their Evo-Stik League Southern campaign at East Thurrock United on Saturday.

Both Ward and Legg spent time out on loan last season, Ward with eventual champions Sutton United and then Icelandic side Fylkir FC earlier this summer, and Legg at both Chesham and then Gosport Borough. And the duo both signed extensions to their existing pro deals with the Royals this summer.

We'd like to wish both players the best of luck during their loan spells away from the club."
