Christ, if you can't go into a new season with optimism and enthusiasm, giving everyone a chance to prove themselves, I think you should probably give up on football. You're going to be unbearable during the season if things don't get off to a good start if you already feel like that.

Given the dire perfprmances in the latter half of last season. The new additions all add character and experience to the group. The lack of leadership on the pitch was visibly lacking. While the league maybe out of reach. Cup run looks far more achievable.

Casting aside the first few years when I was too young to care, I am about to embark on season number 40+ watching Reading.
Through the many promotions and relegations i have enjoyed/hated, starting the new season in a different division always had a feeling of caution or optimism.
But having now "enjoyed" this impressive run of 15+ seasons in the top two tiers, the pessimistic feeling is no longer there.
Totally agree that three of the last four season have seen us too close to the bottom of the Championship, but maybe too optimistically I just do not see us being relegated to the third tier.

As for this season:
Championship: top ten...possibly skirting on the edge of the play-offs.
Cups: A decent run in one....last 16 in one of them.

Here we go. Let's do it.

We had very little creativity from midfield. This will be a big season for Swift. He needs to stay injury free and take a step up from last season.

I'm not worried about us this season actually, for a start we're having a proper pre-season so we actually should be ready for the start of the season this time unlike the shambles of last year. Also with the change in management I doubt we'll have the injury issues we had the last couple of seasons, it is no coincidence that we had a huge increase of injuries as they all seemed to start under Stam's management, whether that be how he conducts training, the quality of the medical team or whatever.

Think we might be workmanlike and unexciting to watch. Lots of tight games won by the odd goal as we will struggle to score goals through a lack of creativity and quality in the final third.

Boring mid-table would be an absolutely delight. If we can win 10+ games at home that would be good too.

Frendlies are a fitness excercise. with 3 more very challenging games coming up it`s looking likely we may go into the new season without a win.
Worried? not in the slightest, it`s when the league starts and we are not winning that I will be concrened.

I don't nessecarily agree with that. It's a new manager doing his first pre season. It's about getting his tactics across and ensuring the players are fit for the season.

Is there any evidence that teams who win their pre season games do better over the course of a season?

I think we'd all like to see some wins, or at least good performances in the last couple of games of pre-season

Sounds like (and this is a good thing) that PC has been working them very hard in pre-season. Some of the results have been down to doing a full week of hard training then straight into the game. As we get closer to the season, I'm sure the intensity of the training will ease off a little so they can properly prepare for each match
