Why do you care about Reading FC

by morganb » 10 Feb 2022 14:08

Following on from the "Dai Yongee and Dayong Pang don't care" thread:

I'm just interested in why you personally care about Reading FC?

Do you defend them when your mates mock their latest defeat?

Do the poor results put you in a bad mood?

Have you stuck with them through thick and thin, in fair weather and foul?

Are you proud to support your local team and their record-breaking history?

Be it their results, the league they are in or even their survival as a club, why do you care about The Royals?

Why do you personally care about Reading FC?

a big yes, to all those questions. I first went when I was 8 and have followed them closely every season since then.

Used to be yes to all but now I can no longer defend the club.

Certainly not a local but I've followed the club since I was 7 years old and continue to do so now. Travelled a fair distance to a few home games and go to a lot of away games up in the Yorkshire/Lancashire area so I do go to a fair few games a season (other than this season and Covid seasons).

Despite everything that has been going on, I was still sat there with the radio on, as well as FlashScores on my phone and the BBC Sport page hoping for any assort of updates and if we were going to get the equaliser, I even had genuine hope of just seeing the "red dot" (you'll know if you use FlashScore) next to our name.

ok, they are the team of my birthplace and I got into the habit of watching and following them.

Them being often "rubbish" makes the good days (which will return) sweeter

Grew up on Colliers Way and when I was too young to attend, I could hear the crowd noise from Elm Park on a Saturday afternoon. My Dad played rugby so rarely got to go, my first game was when I was 9 and was hooked ever since.

Now even though I've not been to a game since a 1-0 win v Huddersfield in the PO Final season due to living abroad, probably watch more games now than ever. The results don't affect me like they used to though as much more important things in life but hate it when I miss a game. Will miss Saturday's game live, so will have to try and avoid the score to watch it "as live" later.

Don’t care about results really, enjoy a win or unlikely draw of course but don’t get upset when we lose.

Most of my friends have a snobbish attitude towards football and don’t understand why I go.

I suppose my love for the club is an unconditional love like that for a family member. No matter what happens, I’m a proud Royal. The exception is when the club does something that is completely antithetical to the values I perceive in it. Historically the second sacking of McDermott was the closest I have come to walking away, but our performances under Stam proved that decision to be a good one. I think appointing Warnock or Terry as manager would be the two things that would cause me to turn away from the club at this point, along with doing a Portsmouth and defaulting upon debts to charities.

As I’ve got older I have drifted away from the club just as I have drifted away from my family. At this point I think the thing keeping me a STH is that I’ve seen several players play for us who I’ve known since they were very young, which has really deepened my sense of community. When the last few have left I don’t know what I’ll do - now that I don’t live in Reading I think I’d be happy coming to one or two games a year. 23+ is a lot…

I was born in Whitley Wood, but only went to Elm park once whilst living there, My dad took me me to a game, think it must have been against Man. U. in 1953-4. We moved to Windsor in 1955 but I went back to Reading to meet my friends from my previous estate and we ended up going to Elm Park most Saturday home games. However they gradually stopped going, I on the other hand met new friends on the terraces. Followed The Biscuitmen all over the country for several seasons (about five or six I guess) we only missed a handful of home or away games). Sometimes our group of five, apart from one other fan (Mick Foster?) who always made his own way,, I think he was involved with the Supporters Club, were the only away fans, so we were on friendly terms with the players and manager, Roy Bentley even gave us a lift in the "team coach" (it was a local coach, hired to get them to Doncaster Station) from Scunthorpe to Doncaster, so we didn't miss our train home. Meeting a girl. now my wife of over fifty years, having children etc. meant football had to come well done my priorities, and could only be followed by reading the Reading local papers, bought and kept by Dad until the next time we met. I still follow The Royals of course, but now live further away from Reading, so now age and living expenses take priority, It may be I haven't been to a match for a very long time, but can say that I have seen Reading FC play in all the four tiers, even the top one, which for so many years of following "my team" I couldn't even dream was a possible but at least I am now able to listen to the every match on Royals TV. Fond memories of those days long ago is the reason I shall always care about Reading, whichever division they are in. I often think if I still lived in the house I was born in, it would be so easy- if my dodgy knee allowed me to- to walk to home games, The only time I feared for the future of my club was the Maxwell, so called merger, but those fears will resurface if we go down this season

Thanks Zip. I spotted a couple of spelling mistakes since, blame it on age! Hopefully, we can stay up and ease my (our?) fears.
