Sanguine Someone with a better understand of football finances than I might understand how Chelsea can seemingly afford pretty much anyone at the moment. c. £250m in transfer fees alone since the summer, and they've only sold Werner of any note, for a tenth of that. Also apparently still in for Fernandez, for over £100m.

they are dishing out crazily long contracts to push the amortisation game to its limits. Wesley Fofana got a 7 year contract, Badiashile got a 7.5 year contract etc

From Despair To Where? Not a transfer but Gareth Bale retires.
I thought he retired at the beginning of November 2019.

Hmm. It's a risky game. When Werner left, for example, they'd have had to realise the remaining book value of his transfer cost, which would have been three years or so and around £27m, albeit in his case offset by the £25m transfer fee. Might explain why Lukaku has only gone to Inter on loan, seen as they 'paid' nearly £100m for him only 18 months ago.

Winston Biscuit Are Utd overpaying as they are bad at negotiating or is there a 'Man Utd Premium' that ends up being added? a kind of knock on effect for the success on and off the pitch over the last 30 years

Sanguine Bit of a coup for Southampton - they will be bringing in Jason Wilcox as Director of Football. Wilcox highly rated and was in charge of Manchester City's academy, heavily credited with bringing through a number of players into the first-team setup. Last season there were over 200 appearances made by City academy products, three-quarters of which were not Phil Foden.
