Reading FC Match Report: 2016/2017 Season - Championship
READING 1 WIGAN 0
Reading: Y Kermorgant (6).
Wigan: --
Yann Kermorgant continued his current remarkable form scoring the only goal of a scrappy game to secure a play-off place for the Royals. Ultimately it made little difference with Leeds failing to overcome Norwich at home guaranteeing Reading's progress in to the play-offs. Regardless of the outcome of the final phase of the season, a top six finish is an outstanding achievement for Jaap Stam and his squad in what was considered to be a transitional period against a background of uncertainty of the ownership of the club.
Reading hit the ground running and in spite of Wigan’s attempts to press high up the pitch, put the visitors under early pressure. McCleary looked particularly sharp in the opening minutes firing in two shots and delivering two superb crosses, the second of which was converted by Kermorgant beating Gilks with the sheer power of his header. So dominant were Reading in the opening phase of the game a comfortable win seemed on the cards. Wigan responded well but in the twelfth minute Evans lunged into a fifty–fifty challenge with MacDonald on the half way line. The sickening crack on impact followed by an agonised yell from MacDonald indicated it was a serious injury. Play was held up for ten minutes whilst MacDonald received treatment and Evans a yellow card. There was clearly no malice in the challenge from Evans. The incident disrupted the pattern of the game and players and fans alike were noticeably subdued for some time.
Both sides had openings but neither ‘keeper were really tested for the remainder of the half. Reading were mixing up their range of passing. Evans hit a glorious long diagonal ball which Beerens controlled magnificently, wide on the left, his touch taking him past the full back but he was unable to create anything after his brilliant work. Wigan looked dangerous on the break. Al Habsi saving from a Powell diving header. On more than one occasion Reading allowed Wigan players to get free in the box and it took an excellent sliding challenge by Evans to snuff out a dangerous attack in stoppage time. McCleary’s recurring injury prevented him from completing the first half leaving Grabban to take over on the right.
Referee Robinson began flashing yellow cards in Reading’s direction with Moore, Kelly, Gunter and Williams joining Evans in the book some of which were harsh to say the least. Ilori had an impressive fifteen minutes replacing Evans and Williams replaced Swift (who had worked harder than usual today) to freshen up midfield. Kelly, Grabban and particularly Blackett presented Wigan with possession in dangerous areas by dwelling too long on the ball as Wigan made an effort to keep their season alive with some enterprising forays into the Reading half. Eventually they lost heart and the game fizzled out into a formality of a home win.
With their play-off place secured the ‘lap of appreciation’ had a bit more relevance than it did last season and everyone went home happy to speculate with some optimism on who Reading will be paired with in the next step towards the Premier League. The way this season has gone for Reading anything is possible.

Daughter was a rare attendee and suggested we could of left after 10 minutes as everything had happened by then, including Evans being a very lucky boy. I think the ref pulled the "it's too early for a red" tactic but later work by him suggested he was just inept.
No matter how many chances we gave Wigan they wouldn't have scored if they carried on playing during the lap of appreciation. I'd like to think we're keeping our powder dry for the bigger battles ahead.
Regardless of anything we may be doing right or wrong, LOLeeds

Could we please have a 'negative belmonts' stand for next season. I'd like to nominate a founder member who sits in Y21 right behind us. Absolutely effing unbelievable. I'm sure he would prefer to see the team play shyte and lose, rather than play poorly and win - just so that he could feel even happier moaning. Today he was moaning about Beerens (his favourite target) conceding a free kick for being too physical; literally a minute later he's bawling 'Beerens you're a chicken' when he had lifted his foot to allow a defender who was sliding in to concede a throw to us.

Are you saying this because the lad broke his leg?. agree it was late. but it wasnt high or over the ball. yellow all day long for me.
Yep, some people don't seem to realise that the officials have to make their decision on the nature/seriousness of the challenge, rather than on the nature of any injury that a player unfortunately picks up.
Hate to see a serious injury like that and wish Shaun Macdonald a speedy recovery.

He then spent the next 10 minutes shouting at the players whenever we passed backwards, before leaving his seat 10 minutes before half-time and disappearing into the concourse. He didn't come back

I think it's simply just a case that there are too many fans still living in 106-land and just haven't watched many other live football matches so the style of play and not lumping into the oppositions half it is just not on their wavelength when it comes to watching football at the mad Stad.
Agreed it was an ugly win - from the stands it is so easy to criticise the players but they just played a side who were fighting for their champ status; Ali al Habsi outstanding, Kermorgant battled all game, Moore again solid, Kelly still an absolute gem. Wigan barely got a touch till the 20-25th minute.
The only negatives from me was that Grabban looks off the pace again? Also Swift and Beerens tended to shy away from a few things and kept quiet.
But the great thing about this team is; we all know they can step up when it matters. Regardless of who we play in the playoffs, I think this squad will stand tall and up the tempo like they tend to against the top teams in this league this season.

I don't think Evans tackle was especially bad looking at the replay. Yellow at the most, certainly didn't appear to be intent
No obvious mom. Missed Williams I thought. Ilori looked good to me, that ball which set up Beerens was a gem.
Thought Wigan were ok actually. Certainly better than a few teams that have come this year.
And yeah quite a few muppets having a go at the team despite being 1-0 up in a game we needed a point in to make the Play offs, which literally nobody thought we were capable of 9 months ago. Makes you wonder sometimes

Frankly I thought the very late tackle on Beerens a bit before was worse in many ways, was a deliberate playing of the man well after the ball had gone, cynical but without the horrendous injury.
It was interesting that initially the Wigan players were angry but at least a couple then spoke to Evans calmly and the 33 shook his hand.

My only concern is the number of teams who underperformed this year (Derby, Birmingham, Norwich, Villa etc), who I'm not sure we can rely on repeating this next year.
Slightly concerned that if we don't manage to win the playoffs, we might find ourselves further down the table next year.
Then again, with the form the playoff teams are in, it could be anyone's year.
We've been there before, I'm cautiously optimistic this year, even if this post fails to reflect that.

Nah that was a nasty red all day long. Very lucky boy.
Luckily he got a yellow so won't be retrospectively banned
Bollocks. A 50/50 ball.
I heard the poor lads leg go and him screaming afterwards but it was a hard tackle nothing more.

The no show for several halves of matches has been disappointing against teams of this calibre though they are fighting for survival they showed why they are where they are.
The job has been done, playoffs achieved hopefully they will find something better for the next games - be interesting who takes the field against Burton and what the result is.
Ultimately now, we move on to the matches that will really matter !

So all in all the majority of viewing fans have seen mostly wins this season, not too shabby right?

Well from now on with a two legged affair, where three points is meaningless, our goal difference suggests we will lose easily in the play offs.
Not to get all snowball on anyone, but we specialise at picking up points in one goal wins at home, so beating teams by one goal at home and taking a heavy defeat away from home isn't going to cut it in the play offs.
I'm glad our season is now in play off mode, and it seems we will most likely finish 3rd, which obviously by definition says we are the 3rd best team in the league, but in reality all it means is that we are the 3rd best team at generating results, which is not the same as being the 3rd best team, by any stretch of the imagination.
I fully expect us to win by one goal at home, but that will be too little too late because we will have lost by more away.
But there you go, go on Reading surprise me!
p.s. to all the teachers on this board, is it normal that so many people on this forum type "should of" when they mean "should have"?
I'm 30 so perhaps i'm already old, but i'm fairly sure my teachers at school would have knocked such an elementary misunderstanding of English out of me. Am i wrong?

Sadly you did go all Snowball !
Alternative analysis says in games against the other playoff sides we have a good record of 4 wins, 2 defeats.
We've won away by 2 goals, lost by a single goal and lost by a few more (in a game when we were down to 10).
Nothing suggests we will lose easily, in fact the stats suggest we'd 'easily' beat Wednesday and need to flip a coin for their other 2.
You argue against yourself by saying we are only 3rd best at generating results, but not the 3rd best team. At this stage it is 100% about results. No marks for style, just need to win.
I think the playoffs are wide open. We could be Bad Reading and get a hiding but equally we could be Good Reading and win the whole thing.
I think getting McShane back is a big part of our hopes and wonder if Jaap has deliberately held him back to make sure he is 100% rather than letting him play at 80%, which he would usually have done.

Does anyone remember what they thought when we went up last time under Brian?
We got the best results, but it would be a stretch to claim we played the best football
This time around, I'd like to think we are a work in progress and with the right confidence, we'll do better than we think
We have yet to hit the highs, perhaps they will come in the next 4 games...
As for the game, Ilori did look good, our midfield needs tweaking and when will I get to see Mendes properly...

Nah. Been watching football for over 50 years. Today was turgid. The worst I've ever seen a top 3 side play in any division. Simply no pattern to the play. After 45 league games you'd expect better.
I did post that it was a bit of an ugly win and boring match, but you failed to quote that bit old boy. I am not suggesting you are one of the fan mindsets I mention, but I assure you we still have fans who talk as if Coppell was manager yesterday and the current team are always compared to them.
I'm referring to the people I mentioned in my post who after 45 games still yell 'forward' and lose their sh1t if a pass goes astray.
