Reading FC Match Report: 2015/2016 Season - Championship
READING 2 NOTTM FOREST 1
Reading: M Vydra (68), O Norwood (81)
Nottm Forest: B Osborn (41)
A stunning long range strike from Oliver Norwood earned the Royals a deserved victory over a Forest side lacking quality and the desire to win. Reading dominated possession from start to finish and were rewarded for their persistence with a second successive league win. Having gone a goal behind against the run of play near the end of the first half a resilient Reading hit back late in the second half with goals from Vydra and Norwood to claim all three points. Reading played with a commendable passion and desire to win considering their position in the league with neither promotion or relegation a realistic possibility.
Without any recognised wide players in the starting line-up Obita and Gunter were detailed to get forward to deliver balls into the box from either wing. Obita was particularly effective in this role in the first half. Although lacking the acceleration to go past full backs he broke down the wing with pace and delivered some excellent early crosses which Kermorgant almost converted into goals. One effort beat De Vries but was cleared off the line and another was superbly saved by the Forest ‘keeper.
McShane headed over and Cox made room for a strike on goal as Reading pinned the visitors ion their own half. Cox held the ball up and waited for Williams to arrive with an overlapping run before sliding the ball into his path. Unfortunately Williams shot was straight at De Vries and blocked when a low strike across goal would have surely produced the opening goal. It was this lack of quality in the box which was to frustrate Reading all evening. Four minutes from half time a square Reading back line collectively switched off and Lansbury slid a perfectly weighted ball through for Osborn to give Forest the lead with a well taken goal. Kermorgant snatched at a chance just before the interval and the ball flew over the bar.
Reading picked up where they left off in the second half and Forest were on the back foot again. Space opened up for Gunter to charge into the Forest box but he was unable to maintain his composure and lost possession at the crucial moment. The ball bobbed around in the Forest six yard box from a corner but nobody could make the required contact to beat De Vries who eventually claimed the ball amidst the chaos. Kermorgant came close to an equaliser when to timed his leap superbly to meet Gunter’s cross but the ball drifted agonisingly a couple of inches wide. With Reading committed to attack a rare break almost produced a second Forest goal. The defence dropped too deep leaving players unmarked on the edge of the box and Al Habsi had to be at his best to push Lansbury’s good strike away for a corner.
With half an hour left McDermott freshened up the attack replacing Cox and Piazon with Vydra and John. John was not at his best but Vydra had an immediate impact reacting well to deflect Norwood’s long range strike past De Vries for the equaliser. As the game moved into the final ten minutes Reading were beginning to run out of ideas to break down the Forest ten man defence until Norwood produced a classic moment of midfield play winning the ball deep in Forest’s half and unleashing an unstoppable shot from outside the box which flew into the net off the far post. It was goal worthy of winning any match. Forest made a token but unconvincing effort to hit back but apart from some very sloppy play from Reading causing some anxiety for the home fans the outcome was never really in doubt.
It has been a very disappointing season overall for Reading but the loyal fans who turned up this evening were rewarded with decent game of football and saw their team play as if the result and their performance still matters. Let’s hope they can maintain that momentum until the end of the season.

Back at my room at the MadStad Hotel. I think we were the better side for most of the game. Their opening strike was against the run of play.
Deflected goal to even it then a wonder-strike by Ollie Norwood.
We deserved all three of those points.
I really enjoyed sitting in Y25 and chanting/singing/cheering with all of you fine folk.
I would rate it a 9/10 overall experience.
I will be back with player ratings in a bit!

While the crossing from Obita/Gunter was better today, it's still pretty sh't. For all the time they had to pick crosses, we never whip balls across between the defenders and keeper, or give aerial balls that our strikers can attack. The ball is always slightly too straight or behind, meaning the strikers are always straining backwards. When was the last time we scored a good thumping header from a sweet cross?
Most players 7/8 today. Apart from Williams, who had an off day imo

Reading F.C. deservedly take home all three points in their home match with Nottingham Forest
Reading put in the kind of performance that I think all Reading supporters would willingly pay good money to watch. Reading were all over Forest to start the game! After creating chance after chance but failing to capitalize in the first half they were struck by a fluke goal against the run of play and went in down 0-1 after the first 45 minutes.
As a Reading fan from across the pond who winds up listening to games over BBC Radio Berkshire it felt like many of our matches where we were created opportunities but were just missing that tiny bit of quality to finish off those chances.
After setting an initial lineup for the game that saw us starting a good number of players who will actually still be with the club next season. Brian McDermott made some masterful substitutions. Bringing in Ola John seemed to give the crowd and the team a spark. And when Vydra joined him it was only a matter of time before we equalised and then took the lead.
Yes, it took a bit of a lucky deflection for the first goal from a Norwood smash that deflected in off Vydra but that second goal was a wonder-strike from Ollie! No one could argue that we did not deserve all three points!
What an enjoyable match-day experience for me! After choosing the newly promoted Royals in 2006 to be my club team I had dreamed of coming over and watching a match live at the Madejski! I finally decided to take the plunge and thanks to my friends off the Reading Fan Forum (www.royals.org) I not only got to attend my first game but felt welcomed like family. The 10-hour overnight flight from LAX to London was entirely worth it. I got to participate in the halftime Lucky Strike Promotion and saw my club play some very attractive football. I can't wait for my next game (which is luckily only a few days away on Saturday vs. Birmingham City).
Man of the Match: Paul McShane (Forest rarely threatened and when they did the Captain cleaned up the mess time and time again. Steady as a rock!)

Chris Gunter 8/10 - (Solid performance)
Paul McShane 9.5/10 - (One of his better games, solid, I always feel confident when he is on the ball. )
Jordan Obita 8/10 - (Nice runs from the edge, decent crosses and I felt some of our best first half attacks were with him involved)
Jake Cooper - 7/10 (The big youngin was steady, headed away one or two dangerous balls)
Oliver Norwood - 9/10 (Both goals started with his shot. What a strike for that second goal!)
Lucas Piazon - 7.5/10 (Fought and tackled well, looked like he is adjusting to the championship style of play. He looked gritty tonight!)
Stephen Quinn - 7.5/10 (No complaints, did his job)
Danny Williams - 7/10 (Gave the ball away quite a few times. Someone said he was hurt. I think he did ok in the end.)
Yann Kermorgant - 7/10 (I like him, but he needs to finish off a few of these chances!
Simon Cox - 7/10 (I know everyone likes to moan about a lack of production. But i think it was his shot that Mills cleared off the line.
Matej Vydra - 9/10 (Was all over the place and helped spur us on to the win.)
Ola John - 9/10 (First thing I do when I win the Euro Lotto is work out a price for John and pay for him to join us permanently.)

I don't think there's anything wrong with the final pass or even particularly the crossing, it seemed to me that no-one other than Vydra is interested in turning with the ball and putting the defense off balance. Instead little taps are attempted back to someone else who is surrounded by defenders.
Norwood absolutely has a future for this team when he's played there.
Liked the ref and his cronies for the most part though neutrals might say it all leaned our way a bit.
I was sure Vydra's goal was off-side, didn't even look close to me, but the lino was adamant it wasn't.

Seahawk - you're a long standing legend around here, so glad you made it. And I assume it was you. I can't wait to hear how you explain a gnome to US customs. "No honestly, it's a thing they do in Europe, little guys with funny hats, I promise you..."
It's safe to say you have the only RFC Gnome in the USA. I'm pleased he got to see a decent game and a win.

In the second half we were not as fluent or as quick. The crosses were poorer and often collected easily by De Vries in the Forest goal and yet we turned it round to win 2 - 1! How did that happen?!! I'm not sure - except that Forest seemed to concentrate on defending their one goal advantage which gave the initiative to us. Even so we looked incapable of scoring - until we did! Then it only seemed a matter of time before we got the winner. Even then we survived some difficult moments as Forest came back at us but it was a well-deserved victory that keeps us in 13th position and - very nearly - mathematically safe this season.
McShane was a rock in defence and Cooper was also solid though I'd like him to control the ball when not under pressure rather than head it aimlessly forward. The midfield all did well with special mention to Norwood, of course, who made/scored both of our goals. Piazon looked as if he might be adapting to Championship football and Williams gave 100% as usual.
Kermie had a few efforts on goal desperately thwarted and Cox did OK without really threatening to score. AAH had no chance with their goal but apart from one effort that he saved well he had little to do. On balance I would award the MOTM to Obita. OJ did pretty well when he came on but, today, he was not the 'super-sub' we have come to expect. Vydra scored and did bring some energy to the game and hopefully he will advance with a little more confidence.
We more than deserved the three points - Forest were, for the most part - very poor. BM got the tactics and substitutions right and we - you've guessed it - move on to the next game!!

One thing I wanted to post here was about the differences between the team as it is now, and how it was under Steve Clarke. I was watching last night and I have a few times in the last couple of months, and the team are FAR better under McDermott than they were under SC.
I only say this as I have seen people on Twatter and some on here saying moronic things such as "one more loss and he's got to go", or "he's not the right man for the job".
Well, I think he is. He's taken a random mixture of players and made what I think is a team.
I planned to post this even at 0-1 down and would have still posted this had we lost. Yea I know it's not been pretty every week, especially those travelling to long away days.
But I just wanted to say I think he is doing a job for us, and think we will improve and actually compete if the summer goes to plan for Brian in regards to signings and changes.

No one had a bad game really, but I would like to highlight Cox. I thought he was really good - who knows what a run of games and a bit more support from a manager (either manager) could have done for him. Harsh to be subbed off.
The body language when we went behind to an admittedly very accomplished Forest goal looked worrying, but they picked it up and really dominated the game.
Good night's entertainment - all the more enjoyable as I was expected a totally flat game, but the crowd responded to the team's commitment and vice versa.
Well done Brian.

Forest were awful, we played some tidy battling McDermott football today. Even the throw ins were taken quickly. Hopefully a sign of things to come next season.
Ps if any club representatives are reading this then tell Hammond to offer Norwood a new contract immediately!

Yesterday Cox never really looked like scoring (in 65 minutes). We were far more threatening when John and Vydra came on.
Without those two we look “competent” but devoid of any real flair
BUT
Did people notice the sudden upsurge in energy from the team, at 65+ minutes? Not "because" John and Vydra came on, but (it looked to me) that McDermott's plan is always the same, and that's to play it tight until 65 minutes and then open up and go for three points, as the risk of losing one point is more than off-set by the bonus of wins.
Al H is a revelation. Hard to believe I'm happy to see him on the team sheet but he seems a good guy, a character and a very decent keeper. We need to remember that when he has a blunder some time in the future. I hope we give him a new contract.

Yea I love the guy, probably my favourite player joint with McShane. I like his passion mainly, even the way he seems absolutely ecstatic to have won the game and always enthusiastically claps each stand, more so than other players.
Plus he's good at stopping footballs going in the net.

Crosses much improved but none of Kermie's headers were "gimmees" that demanded to be planted in the net. Still work to do there.
Cox is decent but Cox-Kermie isn't the right partnership and I didn't expect goals from them. It was very "workmanlike"
Cooper was fine, McShane was AWESOME and edged MoM for me over Obita.
Ignoring his goal and assist Norwood had a game that was very good in parts but also made 3-4 blunders that we got away with. Quinn would be my first midfielder on the team sheet every time. Great player seems to be always there to help out.
I still think Williams is the weak link. It's easy to go "Oooh" when he does these little runs, but what he does, 9/10 times is to run twenty yards and then pass ten when he could have passed thirty in the first place. He actually slows movements down and he loses the ball too much. I would have a fit Tish over him in a heartbeat. I would prefer Fernando. I'd like to see the new kid.
it's not that Williams is a bad player (and of course he's got a few goals) but that he stops our midfield being "a machine". I seriously believe we should cash in and get a more classic player.
The radio seemed to think Kermie had a very good game. I DO think he might form a very good partnership next year with Vydra (or Rakels) or a new player but I don't think he is playing WELL for us yet.
Cox is workmanlike (go on for 60 minutes and tire the opposition) but he doesn't look like a player who would get ten goals in a full season. He's "4th striker" in my eyes.
Piazon was getting stuck in more. I would quite like him to get another year with us because his class would show through next year and he'd do well for us.
John was OK when he came on, but he looked like he desperately wanted to get another 25-yarder. Sign him!
