Reading FC Match Report: 2023/2024 Season - League One
READING 1 BRISTOL R 1
Reading: S Smith (40)
Bristol R: C Martin (57)
Sam Smith scored a well-deserved first goal of the season with an excellent strike just before half
time. Reading, as so often this season, were unable to hold on to their advantage for very long.
Rovers levelled the scores twelve minutes into the second half. Both sides were given a helping hand
in salvaging a point by a referee who turned down strong and justified claims for a penalty at either
end in stoppage time. Although in a game littered with careless errors, neither could claim they
deserved better.
With the Royals still firmly anchored to the bottom of the table, a point was really not good enough
but at least it halted a run of five consecutive league defeats. There were some encouraging signs
from this evening's match. Selles appears to be closer to identifying his strongest starting eleven,
and there although there were few passages of flowing football, Reading kept their heads, discipline,
and defensive shape. The back four, apart from a sloppy couple of passes at the beginning of the
second half which should have cost them a goal, looked good in possession. Abbey's turn of pace
and confidence on the ball took a lot of pressure of the team when under pressure.
Reading pressed effectively at times and the Rovers defence were in trouble on a couple of
occasions playing out from the back. The Royals efforts were finally rewarded when Savage won the
ball wide on the left (with what appeared to be a two-footed challenge!) and the ball ran loose to a
Rovers defender. Knibbs was quick to put his foot in and push a nicely weighted ball to Smith who
produced the perfect striker's goal. A quick look up, and with his first touch he hammered the ball
inside the far post from a fairly acute angle. From the first minute Smith played like he really wanted
to win, scrapping for every ball, an attitude reflected in his celebration in front of the Reading fans
behind the goal. If Reading are going to stay up this season he will have crucial role to play, not just
for his goals, but his leadership on the pitch.
A slick exchange of passes down the left culminated in a nice touch by Knibbs making room for a
clear sight of goal, but his finish didn't do justice to the quality of the build-up and it was not a
difficult save for Cox. Rovers had more than their fair share of possession in the first half but rarely
threatened Reading's goal. Dorsett played well, if left a little isolated at times at left back, and
Button had a couple of relatively routine saves to make. Reading deserved their halt time lead.
The opening ten minutes of second half were chaotic to say the least. Sloppy play at the back almost
gifted Rovers an equaliser. Azeez's poor run of form continued. He seems low on confidence and
seemed unable to keep possession or find a team mate with a pass. He lost the ball on the half way
line and with Yiadom caught out going forward Rovers broke free down the left and Martin finished
well to level the score. Selles had seen enough and immediately replaced Azeez with Elliot. Reading
recovered their composure and played their way back into the game.
Both managers made further changes which had little impact on the game. During stoppage time
Rovers were incensed by a poor challenge in front of goal which denied them an almost certain
winner and Reading had similar claims but not as convincing at the other end.
It is very early in the season to be talking about crucial games, but Reading's abysmal start to the
season already leaves them seven points below the safety of twentieth spot in the table. For the
sake of morale, and the points required to close the gap, Reading really need to win the next two
fixtures against fellow strugglers Carlisle and Shrewsbury, also placed around the bottom of the
table.

OKish first half. Generally low on quality, but we should have been 2-0 up
Rovers took control in the second half after they realised they should target our right side, where Abbey could use his insane pace to cover.

Still think Bindon and Abbey is just too inexperienced a CB combination. Crying shame McIntyre got injured, would have really liked to see him along side one or the other. And he would have been handy for the LB issues. Selles did a lot of damage burning his bridges with Holmes and ousting McIntyre to the bench.
Good to see Smith get on the score sheet with a good finish. Everything in the final third is just bobbly touch and ricochet after fluff otherwise though.
Still not sure what Savage actually brings. Seems to be another one of these technically capable players who just doesn't have a real role. Then again, he's scored and created a few. Game just seems to pass him, and far too many of our players by though. Knibbs is way too anonymous for a senior player with experience at this level.
Azeez had an absolute howler. But he's still one of our most lively threats. Absolutely nothing comes right for the lad though. Wing still the standout player in the side. Alongside Abbey's promise for the future.
If we can keep most of this squad, they should be able to tear up L2 given how they perform in cups. Assuming we can get a decent owner and manager, as always. And they don't have a poor and unlucky start to a season.

Didn’t have a clue what to do out of possession. Didn’t press but then tried to close down too late. BR just passed around us.
In possession absolutely no clue what to do with the ball leading to over complicated play and constantly losing the ball.
Absolutely no movement in the midfield who seemed to be entirely disconnected from the defence both defensively and offensively which is quite a feat.
It’s an utter shambles. The manager is entirely responsible for sending this team out to play like that. He should be nowhere near these players.

All of these players who so excitedly talking about Selles talking them into signing with his exciting project, i'd be fascinated to know what he said. "Come and play directionless hoofball with a few sideways passes and hope the opposition make a mistake we can capitalise on."'?

Then, for some reason, in the 2nd half, it just stopped & the team did as a result. It was almost if they accepted that Bristol would score and a draw was the best we could get.
Honestly no point in Selles now. He has abandoned his principles and made the team even worse as a result. Simply remove him, let Hunt takeover at least until any takeover completes. It can't be worse.
1 point from 9 in 3 consecutive home games & now we go away for the next two. I know we all expect to drop but jeez, a bit of fight would be nice.

All the other teams we have played have looked fitter and much better with the ball than us. The way Selles has wanted us to play has only really worked in the cups, which really just means that we have better youngsters.
Could a Wilder or a Warnock get more from these players or do we have to accept that the squad is League Two/National League standard? I watched Chesterfield play on Sunday and I hate to say it but they’re much better than us.

But that needs a bit of organisation and flexibility from the management team as a game unfolds. Most of all it needs a plan and they are currently rarer in RG2 than a member of a Dai Yongge fan club.
Yep, which it is why someone needs to stand up, say appointing Selles was a mistake and rectify it. Not sure what is severance would be like but surely he could be put on gardening leave if needed and just let Hunt take control of team affairs at least until any takeover completes.

The squad is good enough. It's the manager.
Pretty sure we've been saying that about squads for most of the last few seasons. Usually turns out the squad also wasn't good enough.
Last year we all knew they weren't good enough. Before then, yes squads containing Swift, Laurent, Meite and Joao were good enough.
A revolving door of inadequate managers, confidence sapping form and a toxic club drags them down.
Takeover and new manager and these guys have a chance.

To be honest, I was saying at the start of the season it was important we got off to a good start and didn't go on a prolonged poor run because the lack of experience and age of much of the squad would see heads drop and they'd struggle to recover.
And that's exactly what we have got.
There's lots of talent in the squad. But the inexperience also means a lot of errors, and a struggle to make the best decisions.
Give them a new voice, an injection of confidence and enthusiasm plus an effective way of playing and they are more than good enough to finish safe. But the longer this goes on the less likely a recovery is, even with a genius at the helm.
Dean was a poor signing because he's just another waining CB used to losing.
Losing Smith before the season started has destroyed us. Those early narrow margin games mostly turned to defeats because we didn't have an experienced goalscorer. A couple of better results early on and things are very different.
I think losing McIntyre was also huge. He's one of the few experienced players we have who is full blood committed and positive.
At the moment the team are going through the motions, still trying, but there's no confidence or belief.

Agree - I think it's both rather than one or the other.
Just got to hope an eventual change in manager will change fortunes for ourselves.
I didn't get chance to catch up much with the game last night, although the general feedback seems to be that the game was pretty drab in general and a draw was probably the correct outcome? Any player particularly standout or not.

They clearly don’t know what to do at any point. What would Warnock do with an inexperienced team like this? Keep it very simple. Do the basics, set up to not concede and build some confidence.
In any high pressure situation the last thing you learn is the first thing you forget.

Button - 7 - some excellent save and not his fault for the goal
Yiadom - 6 - good going forward but at fault for the goal but Azeez did not help with getting in his way
Bindon - 6 - did OK, a few stray passes and got over-run a few times
Abbey - 7 - generally a good game, providing some excellent cover at times
Dorsett - 6 - did OK ... a great tackle first half and generally OK, but weak going forward
Wing - 7 - probably the best player on the pitch for us; lots of energy and hard work
Hutchinson - 5 - lots of loose passes and did not dominate enough
Savage - 4 - very weak performance ... so many of his passes went astray
Azeez - 1 - a night to forget ... did nothing first half and partially at fault for the goal
Smith - 6 - a well-taken goal but otherwise not much; struggled up front on his own with lack of service from midfield and wide players
Knibbs - 5 - assist for goal but otherwise very anonymous and should have scored to take us 2:0 up
Subs:
Craig - 6 - did better than Hutchinson - some good tackles and energy
Elliott - 6 - an improvement on Azeez but his final pass was often more hopeful than accurate
Kelvin / NGW - too little time to really make a difference

All fair - likelihood is that they aren't quite up to it but the only way to test that hypothesis is to get them working under a better manager - or frankly any other manager.

Problem is now we’re playing a formation/change which Selles doesn’t really believe in, and the players haven’t been training for
Again didn’t see this game but statistically it’s as poor as any game all season in an attacking sense. And we still concede stupid goals
I’d honestly rather Selles sticks with what he believes in if he has to hang around, though it’s getting to the point no matter what he decides we’ll be useless because he’s lost the confidence of the players, and he seems unable to get them to play anywhere near the level they should be capable of

Can’t use inexperience as an excuse any more. We could play
Button
Yiadom Dean Holmes NGW
Knibbs Wing Hutch Ejaria
Smith Mukairo
If he so wanted to. It’s his choice now. And absolutely no one would look at that team and say it should be anywhere near the bottom of L1 on paper
Agree on Smith (and Wing) being injured being a huge blow though. They’d have cashed in the way we were playing start of season
