Reading FC Match Report: 2022/2023 Season - League Cup
READING 1 STEVENAGE 2
Reading: K Ehibhationham (63)
Stevenage: S Earley (10), D Rose (89)
With all but four of the starting eleven from the recent league victory rested, it was no surprise that Reading were dumped out of the EFL Cup in the First Round for the third season in succession. Reading have, as many clubs always fielded a weakened team in this competition, particularly at this stage so it would be unfair to criticise Paul Inca for doing the same. This season however, the impact of a long injury list was the necessity to select even greater proportion of inexperienced players. Nevertheless this group of players thrown together came close to taking the game to penalties. This opportunity was denied by a last minute winner scored by Rose sweeping home a cross at the far post from close range. Stevenage deserved the victory which now extends their winning run to the beginning of season with the third win in succession.
The habit a falling behind to an early goal this season continued, literally, with a goal from Stevenage's Saxon Earley after ten minutes. There were gaping holes the Reading defence which were exploited as the visitors who passed the ball around Reading's box before an unmarked Earley side-footed past Bouzakis. Stevenage dominated possession in the first half as Reading, clearly lacking confidence and organisation frequently resorted relieved pressure by hitting long speculative passes which failed to produce a single shot of target before the interval. New signing Loum showed signs of quality which indicated his suitability to challenge for a first team football, a notion later confirmed by manger Inca confirmed. Neither side however, threatened to score for the remainder of a dull and predictable first half.
The introduction of Clarke and Camara ten minutes into the second half injected a bit of urgency in to proceedings going forward. After sixty-three minutes Camara slid a delightfully timed and weighted pass through the Stevenage defence to create the first scoring opportunity for the home side. Ehibhatrionham outpaced the defence, and opened up his body to allow him to calmly beat Chapman for the equaliser. His finish and all round contribution was sufficient to justify his inclusion in the squad for Saturday.
The equaliser triggered a spell of pressure which briefly raised hopes of a second Reading goal. Stevenage weathered the storm and re-established their grip on the game. Reading's sloppy defending finally put pay to their chances of progression in the competition. Sweeny, given acres of space and plenty of time to curl a diagonal pass into the Reading box and an unmarked Rose at the far post fired past Bouzakis from close range to restore the visitors lead. Bouzakis didn't have much to do but he looked distinctly uneasy dealing with crosses and generally failed to inspire confidence.
Reading threw launched a final onslaught in search of a second equaliser and were denied what appeared to be a clear penalty when Ehibhatrionham was taken out in the box, but instead referee Brook awarded a free for a collision in the box immediately before the assault on Ehibhatrionham he adjudged to be a foul on Bothwick. So Reading are out of the EFL Cup, but I don't think the Reading management team are too bothered. At this stage reducing the number of injured experienced players is an understandably higher priority.

Tonight was a comfortable opportunity to build confidence and build some good momentum. Instead we just confirmed what most of us knew - majority of players backing up aren’t good enough and unless we get loads of bodies in by the end of the window we’ll be bottom 3 by the end of the season.

Cup competition progression generates revenue. Smaller the revenue the lower the playing budget. Spiral downwards needs to be broken.
We have an injury crisis. Simply not enough fit senior players.
The weather is very hot. Saturday is winnable. I care far more about that game than tonight.
Besides it gives the management a chance to see which Academy boys can make the step up.
Sorta agree, some of the reactions are a bit over the top and better Championship XI’s have been knocked out tonight
In saying that, it would be nice to get past the first round for a change, that’s 5 in a row we’ve lost now and we never seem to have any interest in progressing anymore. I get it with the current situation we’re in but there always seems to be an excuse as to why we’re throwing away cup games
And whilst you can gauge attributes the young players have in a game like tonight which could be useful, it doesn’t necessarily reflect their ability to make the step up to the first team, given that they’ll be playing with a pretty much completely different XI

Abrefa was OK (fairly quick, so could get himself out of trouble)
John Clarke was decent
Holzman, Leavy, Tuma and Craig are not ready yet
Ehibhatiomhan took his goal well, but could do with a loan spell
Jahmari Clarke was decent
Camara changed the game, played well
Also thought Loum was good, will be a decent addition. Bouzanis gave me no confidence whatsoever.

In this case, understandable. But winning and success breeds winning and success. And our recent cup record is atrocious. We won't learn much about the Academy players chucking them out en masse in games we seem to have no interest in winning, either.
It's not that long ago we made the QFs of the FA Cup semi regularly. In a difficult season ahead, something to cheer about is required.
On balance I am with Ian on this believing that younger players should be brought in for cameo appearances to play alongside seasoned pros rather than be thrown in altogether for a game and hope somehow that it works out..
Also am in agreement that progress in cup competitions, especially in a season that looks to be one spent fighting for survival, is a good distraction for both players and fans.
Injuries can, and often do, happen in training so it is impossible to protect our players from getting injured and even half of a game last night would surely have helped with general fitness (rather than training) for some of our regulars and by them playing a part the youngsters might well have learned more than in just a kick about with their mates.
As for Stevenage, this was not their first team that has won 2 league games at a level 2 rungs below us as they made 7 changes from Saturday and still ran out fairly easy winners.

We've a financial crisis and not been competitive in cup games in recent years. Smaller budgets will simply amplify the predicament the club is in. Hanging on at the bottom of the Championship year in year out isn't going to bring fans back through the turnstiles.

Relegation to League One would be far more damaging The priority has to be staying up over all else
If we had nine or ten more senior players he could have played a strong side but he doesn't have that luxury

We're not though. The club has money, they just can't spend as much of it as they would like.
Getting through to the second round of the league cup last year was worth £7,000.
Would say that avoiding injuries is a lot more important than such a small amount and it is probably a much bigger deal for a club like Stevenage. Even if you lose a semi-final, it is only worth £25,000.

Very much this. Looking at Round 2 - there are very few sides in there where we would likely get a big crowd for - even allowing for it being regionalised - Villa would like sell out the away end but I don't see many games that would get people coming in for but we would likely lose. Even away games, you are hoping for a big gate to get a decent pay day but you are equally likely to end up away to Exeter as you are Villa. Would I have liked to win last night, yes - does it bother me we lost? Not in the slightest.
The team was exactly the right one to put out last night, especially with Ejaria also out now leaving us with what 10/11 fit outfield players. Rotherham on Saturday is the only important match and with another 18 league games to play before the WC, we have to be pragmatic.
I would hope though, that if the season is going OK by the time of the FA Cup 3rd round, we would look to put out a stronger side for our regular trip to Old Trafford.

The owner has money, not us. He can't use it for us without cheating. We are in a financial crisis

It makes no sense. Both showed more than enough to get at least another half dozen sub appearances last year. Clarke barely played again after that brace.
He got injured didn’t he straight after. Then got the feeling he rubbed ince the wrong way
Hopefully over that now. Think Ehib looks a better player but Clarke is handy
Actually first time I’ve seen us with 2 big lads up top for quite a while (though suppose Meite sort of qualifies). Quite liked it - they are both huge, quick and decent touch. Ehib must be 6ft4 or 5 I reckon
Camara should be involved 100%. Wonder if he had an injury

Generally impressed with Camara and Clarke from the little I've seen, Azeez and Dorsett too and these are the four I'd put at the top of the "ready" list. Would say these players should be at least regularly used subs for Reading this season and certainly starting when injury or suspension kicks in - or at the very least, like Dorsett, out on loan somewhere getting regular starts ready to be considered part of the first team squad here when they are recalled/return.
Be interesting to see if Dorsett is recalled in January (presuming he can be) and if a new deal will be negotiated with him this season.
Another question to throw at PI on Thursday.

Only player I thought had a genuinely bad game was Holzmann. I can understand not wanting to play Dorsett on the right of a three, and not sure if Stickland is back to his best. I hope he doesn’t have to play a league match.
Loum looked like someone who will improve our side. Very quick feet, made a lot of things look easy. Only slight concern is that there was a little bit of the Ejaria-style hold up play in him - not sure we need even more of that!
Forwards all did well. Tuma was a live wire who on another day would have drawn a couple of red cards. Ehibhationham has come so far in the last year and took his goal well. Would love to see us play with Jahmari on the left and Meite on the right - full backs would be terrified.
Referee was awful - worst I can remember since that Sheffield Wednesday game where he apparently didn’t know you could give fouls in the box.

Ditto
The first round of this meaningless (for the vast majority of clubs) cup should be played pre season (probably as they do elsewhere in mini tournament groups of 3)
IMHO

First half poor - second half was decent
Nice to hear Ince praising Camara. Hoepfully will involve him now
Agreed. Clarke and G-W both played out of position first half and it showed. They were far better when they switched after half time.
Camara was very good when he came on, although their centre backs had two big, mobile strikers to deal with by then. Be interesting to see how he does when we play one up top and he's got a little less space. Definitely deserves a chance though.
