Reading FC Match Report: 2022/2023 Season - Championship
READING 2 QPR 2
Reading: J Hendrick (28), J Hendrick (42)
QPR: T Roberts (66), T Roberts (80)
An extremely poor decision by referee Darren Bond just after half time almost certainly cost Reading a win they arguably didn't deserve. Shortly after the interval Shane Long burst in to the Rangers box and was brought down from behind by a clumsy challenge with the goal at his mercy. Long may not have scored, Reading might not have converted the penalty, but either way they were denied the chance to take a three goal lead by a referee's mistake. A third goal would have been almost certainly enough to secure a home win. It doesn't help to dwell on such things but neither should they be completely ignored.
Rangers will be equally justified in claiming they deserved at least a point for their efforts particularly after falling behind by two goals in a strange first half. Reading opened brightly and Rangers struggled to clear an Ince cross and had an early sniff of goal as the ball bobbled around in front of goal. Rangers then quickly settled into their rhythm and threatened to dominate the game. They were quicker to close down and to pick up any loose balls the middle of the pitch, of which there were many, as Reading’s passes constantly failed to reach their intended target. Fortunately for the Royals, Rangers’ couldn’t find a way though their defence in spite some impressive passing and movement going forward. A clever flick by Dykes drifted just past the post was the closest they came to scoring in the first half.
Gradually Reading managed to string some passes together and took the lead in spectacular fashion. Jeff Hendrick has struggled on occasions this season with his technique when striking the ball at goal from distance, but in the twenty-eighth minute he drilled a superb effort just inside the post from outside the box giving Dieng no chance whatsoever. Reading were now in the ascendency and Long came close to adding a second. Dickie deflected his attempt over for corner. Rangers responded well, but three minutes from half time Yiadom’s fine strike was parried upwards by Dien and Hendrick was lurking at the far post to tap into the empty net.
The second half was a very different story. After referee Bond had decided it was acceptable for a Rangers defender to bring down Shane long from behind when he was clean through on goal, Rangers dominated possession forcing Reading to sit back and soak up pressure. Paul Ince decided to fortify his defence with the introduction of Scott Dann and Tom McIntyre, a strategy which clearly did not work. Rangers pulled a goal back three minutes later. Tyler Roberts exposed the lack of mobility, and slack marking, in Reading’s centre back trio. Holmes was turned easily by Roberts, and neither Dann, or Sarr were sufficiently nimble to prevent the Rangers striker from driving the ball inside the far post.
A good save from Lumley denied Rangers an equaliser, but Reading were looking distinctly shaky at the back. Ince’s last throw of the dice to stem the flow of Rangers’ onslaught was equally ineffective. What was desperately required was a forward to hold the ball up to take pressure of the Reading defence. On came Joao and Meite to replace the injured Carroll and Long. Sadly neither were able to fulfil that role. Meite to his credit, as always, brought energy and threat to the attack. Joao however was totally anonymous. Surely the now fit Azeez should be on the bench too offer something different up front.
The inevitable equaliser came as Reading lost their way completely. Sarr failed to get his head to a cross at the far lost and when the ball fell to Roberts in the six yard box there was only going to be one outcome. The remaining ten minutes of the ninety, and an additional six minutes, were nail-biting for Reading fans who watched their team scrap for a point for which they were eventually grateful.

Hendrick motm, still cannot fathom why on earth Rahman gets ahead of NGW on current form. Hoilett is not a right wing back.
Long was really effective and should have won a penalty. Carroll and Ince did well too. Point a fair result now need to capitalise at Stoke (and hope Long, Carroll and Hutchinson aren’t injuries to worry about).

Never having Long deserving a penalty, he threw himself at the ground and his leg out to the back and side to make contact with the defender. He was going nowhere. And the ref completely saw through it... Clearly saw the whole thing and categorically waved no pen. I thought he had an excellent game.
Don't understand how Rahman plays all the time. Don't think Sarr is worth his place.
I'd probably go:
Hoilett, Yiadom, McIntyre, Holmes, NGW
McIntyre in the middle because he struggles a bit covering his wing back and Holmes is much better at that. It was very noticeable that the second Yiadom left the centre of defence we started struggling really badly with just no mobility or pace there. And McIntyre and Hendrick couldn't screen them well.
If Hutchinson isn't going to get fit and with Fornah out, I think we need more midfield cover. Today we ended up with just 1 midfielder in midfield.

I think if we'd have carried on attacking them we'd have won 3-0

We have the majority of the squad fit again, so why is Hoilett playing WB?, why is Yids playing CB? why are we sticking to this turgid formation?
Why are we so bad at passing and ball retention? our defense gave the ball away so many times today it was horrible, hence QPR just kept coming back at us.
Lucky point today from a position where we should have been 3 up....
Lumley - 7 Kept us in it, great point blank reaction save on there 2 second goal.
Hoilett - 4 Not a WB, Should have been Abrefa or Yids.
Yids - 6 Not a CB.
Holmes - 7 Our best CB again, solid as ever.
Sarr - 4 Did we really sign this guy on a 4yr contract  Poor in the air and abysmal passing.
Babba - 4 Please just get rid, NGW has so much more potential, yes he's a bit raw but offers so much more.
Hutchinson - 4 Was looking shaky even before he went off, with his injury record that could be him done for the season.
Loum - 6 Not as good as the past few games, passing was iffy and hold up play poor.
Hendrick - 8 Two goals, what more can you ask from a midfielder.
Ince - 7 A typical Tom Ince game, he does what it says on the tin.
Carroll - 6 Tried his best to hold up play and create for others, just did really come off today. Hopefully just a sprain or knock.
SUBS
McIntyre - 5 I didn't really notice him funny enough, however, we did concede two after he came on.
Dann - 4 Should have been put out to pasture last year, has the turning circle of the "Titanic".
Long - 6 Typical Long, i've watched the penalty twice now and still unsure, seen them given though.
Joao - 6 Did ok, even helped back in defense....he must be off then.
Meite - 6 I just love this guy, he gives so much...why he's not played as an inside forward is criminal.
Mbengue - The second half was calling out for this guy in defense to get stuck in and give us some pace back there...ah well maybe next week.

The mis-placed euphoria on here elegising about a win and an Ince out when we get beat (or throw away a win) is so naive.
It’s Russian Roulette this year. I hope we grind out enough points and that is all, however it happens, obviously that counts, but I have my doubts and a sinking feeling, especially given the unprecedented closeness of the league.

I totally agree on all of that including player ratings. Tom Ince was our biggest threat, Sarr, Loum, Hoilett and Rahman were poor. NGW should be our starting left back next year, I'd be giving him an improved deal.
Ince has often played McIntyre who's not a left back there and Hoilett who's a winger at right back it's not their games. I'd go back to a 4-2-3-1 or a 5-3-2 against Watford at home.

I'm not Ince out as he's doing better than my expectations and I like the guy, but unless he learns a lot from days like today and takes responsibility then I don't see him as a long term manager. He certainly won't get his 3 year project with us. I'd like him to as he's likeable but I felt concerned he blamed the players for today but not himself and Alex Rae for dodgy subs. As a leader you always have to hold your hands up if you make a bad decision. Maybe he will admit in private that he screwed up.

This is spot on. We have players at the back end of their careers so inconsistency is going to be rife.
What I don’t understand however is 2 things:
1) ince continually playing players out of position and
2) a formation that doesn’t suit the squad of players. We have 1 player suited to playing wing-back (NGW) in the whole squad…and he’s mostly left on the bench. Sack off the 3 at the back, moved to 4-2-3-1 so we can utilise Meite, Ince & Azeez as inside forwards. And lo and behold, we might get something out of Joao. If not, we’ll have players playing more closely alongside Carroll or Long

However, credit needs to be given to the first half switch when Hutchinson had to go off. Would have been easier to just bring on Dann or McIntyre then but bringing Long on changed the dynamic and we were excellent from then on. Just made the 2nd half collapse more frustrating.

And PI was not happy with the team’s performance in either half!
And wouldn't take responsibility for that
That’s what I thought, bit odd to say that and make a point about dropping deeper all the time, yet he’s the one who brought on two central defenders for Hoilett (playing wing back) and Loum (playing midfield) in what I think was an utterly pointless change (though both Hoilett and Loum were pretty poor). What Reading needed was someone to push up and give Rangers something more to worry about.

Yes, not impressed with what I’ve seen of Sarr so far, great debut then injured and since then he seems to spend much of the games he has played giving the ball away in dangerous positions. But then as we know this squad is not perfect by a long way and you have to get by with what’s available and Sarr is a massive unit posing great threat at set pieces (just a shame Reading’s basic creativity is so poor). To be honest though recruitment has been extremely good with next to no resource. Hope that can continue when Reading are able to trade properly again in July.

In that respect, I think he's doing a perfectly good job in our current circumstances but have always doubted whether he's the man to take the club forward.
In fairness, if we achieve a comfortable mid table finish this season then he will have exceeded expecation.

I'm not seeing the same issues with Hoilett as others, I think he's been fine. And I don't really want Yiadom at RWB, he's just not great at getting ball in the box. I like him at RCB, adds some pace and versatility, we conceded twice once he moved up and out.
I'd like to see Abrefa get some more action at RWB to keep Hoilett fresh.
As with everyone else, I don't rate Rahman. He has obvious quality, but he's just so unreliable. And he doesn't really create many goals, despite often being in the areas you'd expect him to be doing so. Much prefer the more raw NGW. I think his pace and drive scares defenders more.
This Reading side is at it's best when it's flying forward running at people... Ince, NGW, Hoilett, Meite, Long, Yiadom can all do that to an extent...

For sure. Love Ince but wouldn't be upset if we change manager in the summer. He'll always have my respect if we did that.
I think he's probably good for another season. Agree he isn't likely to get us to the top, but he is clearly building forward at the moment and worth seeing what he does with a bit less restriction.
He's definitely exceeding expectations.

I think Long was quite entitled to and indeed expected to cut across the defender given the position he had got himself in, which was slightly ahead of the defender. In that situation the defender has to exercise caution or risk conceding a foul. Not only did he have a hand across Long trying to hold him back but he also took him out with his body.
If, as some argue (and I can see why they might), Long deliberately threw himself at the ground in an attempt to win a penalty, rather than just cut across the defender en route to goal (as I see it), then surely the ref should've booked him for simulation.

I kind of see where Ince is coming from regarding the clubs' mentality to drop off, but then again, is it just the club or is just the mentality of teams in general? Understand his point, continue with what you're doing but eventually there would have come a point where we'd drop off, relinquish the ball and counter attacked as they took more risks. Yes, we were poor in the second half, but I don't think it's just our clubs' mentality, I think a lot of teams would drop off to protect a 2 goal lead at home.
His subs have been questioned, which I can understand. I've never been comfortable bringing a CB on in a game tactically when holding onto a lead. A like-for-like change due to an injury, then fair enough, but I always think it's tough to come on in a game at CB in most situations, let alone when you're under pressure because you very quickly have to get up with the speed of the game and I think, psychologically at least, it gives the opposition a boost as well because it's a defensive change.
We need to get Sarr out of the team now as well, he's costing us a goal every game. Floated crosses into the box he should be eating up at every opportunity, but he's now been beaten and out-jumped at the far post by Sargent at Norwich, Piroe by Swansea and didn't clear his lines yesterday at the far post which lead to the goal. McIntyre is decent enough by all accounts and I trust him over Sarr everyday at the moment.
Tough pill to swallow, but it happens and we just have to use it as a learning curve and move on. Don't really care about the performance against Stoke, we can have our worst performance of the season, providing we just take the points.

I'd argue that Yiadom is also a perfect ring back. NGW and Yaidom would make a great wing back pair

I certainly thought he was lucky not to get booked.
