Reading FC Match Report: 2022/2023 Season - Championship
READING 2 ROTHERHAM 1
Reading: A Carroll (52), T Fornah (90)
Rotherham: Peltier (38)
A last minute winner from Tyrese Fornah earned Reading a vital three points against relegation threatened Rotherham. Rotherham took the lead just before interval courtesy of a Peltier header before Paul Ince made crucial changes to spark a comeback lifting the Royals into a more comfortable mid table position. The introduction of Azeez and Fornah at half time gave Reading a cutting edge which had been sadly lacking in a dour and dire first half. Andy Carroll levelled the scores early in the second half, and in a game which could have gone either way, Fornah popped up in the six yard box to nod in the crucial second goal.
In a chaotic opening ten minutes Rotherham’s defence was a complete shambles, but Reading were unable to take advantage of their dominance. It was an ugly first half with United conceding a string of free kicks clattering into Reading players on and off the ball in the middle of the pitch before settling down to enjoy decent spells of possession. The ball was hoofed and headed back and forth as Reading struggled going retain possession going forward. Their lack of movement and poor passing meant United looked fairly comfortable at the back. Peltier hit the bar with a delicate effort before heading the opener from a free kick on the right after thirty-eight minutes triggering a chorus of boos from sections of the home fans at half time.
To his credit, Paul Ince made decisive changes at half time. Azeez was introduced to play wide on the left. His pace, and willingness to take defenders on, provided the cutting edge so sadly lacking in the first half. Azeez linked up well with Guinness-Walker who had replaced the injured Rahman just before the interval. Fornah, also introduced at half time, brought greater cohesion to midfield with his touch, movement and passing ability. With a better balance in midfield, McIntyre was now far more effective in his holding role and had very good second half. Tom Ince held a wide position on the right linking up with Yiadom. Ince saw less of the ball with Lumley picking out Carroll, who was now gravitating towards Azeez on the left, with his increasingly improving distribution. Carrroll was winning nearly everything in the air, in spite of United’s dubious tactics to prevent him from doing so.
The half time changes took seven minutes to deliver the equaliser. Guinness-Walker was fouled down by the corner flag on the left. Azeez struck a perfect free kick for Carroll to meet with a typically thunderous header giving Johansson no chance. Rotherham hit back and the game became more open as both sides went looking for a second goal. The Reading defence recovered well to prevent a persistent Washington from restoring United’s lead when he broke clear on the halfway line.
The combination of Azeez and Carroll delivered the winning goal in the last minute. Azeez found Carroll with a corner around the penalty spot. Carroll headed the ball towards goal and the ever alert Fornah popped up to head past Johansson from close range. Rotherham threw on the tallest players remaining on the bench for the four minutes of stoppage time, which lasted closer to six minutes, before the referee blew the final whistle earning himself a barely served hug from Mbengue.
With the threat of relegation diminishing Reading will go into the next crucial fixtures against struggling Cardiff City and Blackpool with a little more optimism. Hopefully Paul Ince will consider starting with the eleven which finished this game.

I feel for Baba but he cannot stay in the side. He was dreadful giving the ball away with terrible passes, being out jumped for a header from which they ended up hitting the bar and the free kick from which they scored.
I am beginning to see what ptr sees in Azeez who looks much more muscular. If he can stay fit he will be a real threat for us and played a big part in both goals including winning a soft corner for the second goal.
Lumley now looks like a confident keeper. Great punches at the death. Sarr was much better.
Carroll MoTM for a great header and excellent assist.
A vital three points but scarcely deserved.

Simply need to go with the more proactive, positive 433 now. We're going to lose games anyway so might as well set up in a way thst gives us a better chance to win.
NGW and Azeez were excellent and must start on Friday, NGW does always seem to be better off the bench though but he needs 2 or 3 starts now even if he stinks up South Wales on Friday night.

Agreed with P.Ince about we never really blow teams away, Blackburn aside, so when you haven't won for half a dozen games then just getting the win and grinding it out is important and a good characteristic to have. It leaves us in a far better position in the table and points wise as well, even if others have to play.
Azeez and NGW did well when they came on, it wasn't the teams best performance overall and Carroll gets plaudits for his involvement in both goals. Azeez you feel like is like a traditional winger on the left and can swing those crosses in that Carroll thrives off and Azeez should have scored (or passed to Ince to score) when he got clear of Peltier, that's what he gives us, a threat and that's what we lack. Need to do something similar in our next couple of games.
A lot of pressure taken off Friday now.

My son adores Baba but I think even his love is waning. What gets my goat and I know it turned out to be an injury but I have seen it before is that players go down injured, trainers come on so the player has to go off. We are then down to ten men defending an attacking free kick, and they score gggrrr. Grinds my gears!
Lumley, mbengue and Sarr again excellent last night. A great core there at the back. Yiadom is so thick at times, literally a walking booking at times and lucky not to be booked earlier.
Fornah has energy and needs to start.
I know players are coming back in but do feel that the team that started that second half should be the first 11 on Friday night.

Credit for swapping Long for Azeez though and going 4 at the back.
So lets just hope it is the second half team that starts at Cardiff......

What I find most concerning is the inability to understand that the loan deal with Chelsea for Baba insists that he plays if fit (well, that’s my take on it, anyway)
I did wonder if there was something in it like that....but if there is I would find it concerning that ANY club would sign a player with that type of commitment......

He does seem to have his favourites regardless of how they perform. Wouldn’t surprise me at all if he stayed with the same starting lineup on Friday, other than Baba assuming he’s now out.
PI made the point that the team was unchanged for the sake of consistency adding that Arsenal do it
He doesn’t seem to get that his overly negative team selections are fairly consistent though!
Many fans can see it so why can’t he?

But it sounds like we set up like usual with slow players and using Carroll as a target man. But as soon as we put a bit of pace on the pitch and set up a bit more positive and use the players correctly, we looked like a mid table side?
Also very alarming that Ince has come out and said he wont change his style any time soon.......I hope he is lying.

That’s just daft, you can change a player here and there and still get that consistency. Pauno did the same same tactics and team week in week out never changed it up and that was one of the biggest gripes fans had about him. No plan b

I think the bottom line is, managers these days just don't tend to change all that much. They'll tweak their styles and look to improve on the framework that they've got, but very rarely do they look to drastically change what they are doing, so I can't say it's a massive surprise to hear Ince say that.
We do need to try and keep a solid foundation, so I can see where he is coming from re consistency but we also need to try and balance that out and get more of a threat into the team as well, which Azeez's pace brings and NGW and Hoilett are two wing backs that can get us higher up the pitch, it just means we need comfortable ball players to do that, which we don't tend to have in games.

The injuries to Long and Rahman led to the ultimately successful display down our left although maybe people have gone a bit OTT about a player being able to cross a ball from a set piece.
Cardiff away is different but Rahman has to be out, injury or not, and Long has to be a doubt-was he concussed in that early challenge, there were no close-ups nor replays by Sky ?
If we lose Long we lose a defender from the front but whoever comes in provides something a bit different going forward although I wonder if Ince will go 4-5-1 or 5-4-1 for Cardiff.
Relieved at the result but we really are a hard watch.
Roll on next season when everything wiil be wonderful with our new £100 million squad

The thing about picking a consistent XI is its a good idea, but it has to actually be your best one to start with.
Picking a consistently poor one is not good just because its consistent.
And he's constantly swapped throughout the rest of the season...
He's becoming full of it.

He fcuked up the selection, I expect he realises that and hence why he made the changes so early
Still sounds like an absolute shocker of a first half
On another note our home form really is sensationally good - or at least the results are. 4 wins and 2 draws from the last 6. I can’t really fathom why tbh and why we are so much worse away. We seem to play basically the same way

No I can't work out why it's so much different away from home either. For whatever reason when tyres hit the tarmac it's as if we're a completely different team. Whether that comes down to mentality from the manager, I don't know.
But yes our home form is as good as it's been for a good long while considering we've struggled at home really ever since Stam left bar the season we finished 7th.

Clearly has to be that and on same par with Hendrick with the difference being the latter is improving with each game.
If chelsea are paying all of the reported £89k a week and must be they clearly have the right to say this with either a clause in that we pay a contribution when he doesn’t play or loan gets terminated. Sounds ridiculous but can be only explanation.

Thing is we’re not a completely different team. Totally different results but performances much tbe same. We set up the same, play the same way etc. just seems we more often than not get a bit more luck at home, make slightly fewer shit mistakes, or they at least don’t get punished as much

Then time to terminate the loan I think

It's got to be a mentality issue.
Given the remit has been survival, you can imagine that the manager has gone over some principles for that, compact unit, strong home form, competitive, tough to play against etc and these are mantras that P.Ince has used on numerous occasions during pre/post-match press conferences this season.

The football finance guy Kieran Maguire has said that PL clubs do use clauses where the share of the wage that the loan club pays is dependent on appearance stats - he suggested the percentage of club games where the player appears for at least 70 minutes (where they are fit to do so).
For example, if Baba plays in 50-60% of our games then RFC have to pay 40% of his wages. Whereas if he plays in 90% of our games we only have to pay 10% of his wages.
I'm not actually sure if the EFL would let us sign a contract where we would end up paying a player something like 40k a week. But our persistence with these Chelsea loanees suggests that something is going on.
