Reading FC Match Report: 2020/2021 Season - Championship
READING 1 NORWICH 2
Reading: M Olise (14)
Norwich: E Buendia (11), T Pukki (pen 55)
Norwich moved three points clear at the top of the Championship with this narrow victory over Reading at the Madejski Stadium this evening, but for Reading fans the performance of their team was of greater significance. Deprived of their leading strikers, Veljko Paunovic put together a team which provided stubborn opposition for a City team considered to be one of the leading contenders to win the title. Paunovic's tactics and selection almost paid off. An uncharacteristic error by Andy Rinomhota gifted City an early goal. Reading's response was swift, and with aid of a strike by Ejaria which deflected off Olise, the Royals were level three minutes later. Pukki scored the winner early in the second half from the penalty spot after Aarons was brought down by Moore. In a late flurry Reading forced three corners in stoppage time and it took a very good save from McGovern to prevent Olise's free kick from dipping under the bar. Had it gone in nobody could argue Reading did not deserve a point. Certainly not the Reading fans who applauded their team off the pitch at full time.
The omission of Baldock, the only available recognised striker, raised a few eyebrows but Paunovic played to his strengths and included a blend of attacking and defensive midfield players intended to stifle the City attack and pose a threat on the counter attack. Baldock would probably agree his strength is not winning long balls in the air against towering centre backs or using his strength to hold the ball up playing as a lone striker. Consequently City’s centre backs saw a lot of the ball but they spent most of the time passing the ball sideways. In spite of that City only enjoyed slightly more possession over the ninety minutes (54%) and it was only when Reading were chasing the game did they really look threatening going forward. The nearest they came to a third goal came when second half substitute Dowell hit the post.
The effort and commitment evident this evening has been missing at times this season, and it was encouraging for Reading fans see their team react so positively to falling behind to the league leaders with a line up significantly weakened by injuries to their two leading strikers. It was good team performance overall but it was frustrating to see possession squandered by some sloppy passing, and the concession of unnecessary free-kicks in situations which only served to relieve pressure on City’s defence. Ejaria had one of his frustrating games. Moments of outstanding skill but also hanging on to the ball too long and losing possession. Olise is undoubtedly a match winner but somehow feel he needs to be used more sparingly and, having not yet reached physical maturity, he struggles at times in the hustle and bustle of central midfield. Tactically the team lost it’s shape for spells with a lack of width (particularly on the left) making it hard to stretch the City defence and build pressure. When Baldock came on late in the game it might have been interesting to see what might have happened if someone had popped a ball in behind City’s somewhat sluggish centre backs. It almost came off but Baldock timed his run badly and was caught offside.
Before kick-off, given the current situation, I was hoping rather than expecting Reading might take a point from the game. By the end of the evening I felt it well within their capability. Under Paunivic there is always a clear game plan which the players are clearly committed to following. In spite of the defeat the atmosphere in the stadium this evening felt overwhelmingly positive. Reading are still in the top six and there was further evidence that we have a very shrewd manager capable of getting the best out of his squad. We are also beginning to see that all important rapport between players and fans return which is good news for everyone involved with the club. With almost half the season gone Reading are still very much in the running for a play-off place in every respect.

Same old problems. We sit deep , cannnot get out of own half then gift a slopppy careless goal.
As Birmingham did. Norwich on the offensive had players wide out on either touchline. Then double up on the fullbacks. Ejaria, Aluko, Semodo , Olise drift all over the place (normally centrallly) leaving huge spaces for the opposition to play in.
Thank goodness we've points on the board. As going to be a few barren weeeks ahead. Unless we find a way of playing with the players currrently available.

We’ve lost over two thirds of our goals in Joao and Meite, not to mention all the work they do for our style of play in addition to scoring, and one of the best attacking left backs in the league (and that’s just the recent injuries). Any team with those sorts of injuries will struggle, unless of course you’re a Norwich or Watford with good squad depth and largely the same players they had in the premier league.
So long as this period doesn’t affect us mentally too much I think we will be ok and in for a decent shot of the playoffs.

We started both half’s very slowly and paid the penalty. We played as if we were the away side hoping to catch them on the break and but didn’t have a striker to capitalise. I really am done with Baldock who imo goes down as one of the worst value signings in our history. Twice tonight we broke and both times he wasn’t up to it. The first time he strayed offside. The second occasion he was in a great position on the edge of the box but instead of attacking the defender he went away from goal. He offers nothing but workrate.
I thought Norwich were decent but if we hadn’t been so badly hit by injuries we would have got something from tonight.

Rafael made a couple of stops he would have been expected to make and a deflection against the post was all they had, I`m more than convinced with a full strength side we would have got at least a point.

I don’t see why the Norwich player would dive when he had a clear shot on goal. If you’re being generous then maybe he slipped, but it’s hard to argue that Moore didn’t cause the slip. Tripping or attempting to trip an opposition player is a foul. I don’t think Moore is lucky that he didn’t end up in the book either for the foul (which on another day could very easily have been ruled as reckless) or for dissent.

You can’t just say “take away x player and they’d be lower down”. He’s part of Norwich and part of the reason they’re where they are.
Take away Joao and we’d be mid table/fighting relegation.
I'm not sure that's true
Where would we be without Joao’s goals? He has scored a number of goals this season that neither Meite or Puscas would have buried.Without him we are mid table at best.

Mid table possibly but certainly not fighting relegation. If Puscas had played every game, he may have scored goals that Joao wouldn't have scored? Likewise Meite will score goals that Joao wouldn't have.

I don’t think Moore actually made any contact and certainly not sufficient to result in a delayed, theatrical dive. Their player should have been booked for diving.

The obvious problem without Joao and Meite was that we did not occupy Norwich's back four allowing them to push up and press us high which led to the first goal.
VAR may have ruled out their pen but we would have wanted it at the other end so swings and roundabouts on that one.
I find it shocking that we do not possess a single full back in the squad deemed good enough to deputise for either Richards or Yiadom, a big problem which must be addressed in January. I thought before the game that Arrons would get joy on the right for Norwich as he is a top young player who likes to attack and is quick. So it proved.
The difference between the squads was illustrated when Norwich brought Cantwell and Hugill off the bench, two players who would be first choice in any other championship team with the possible exception of Bournemouth.
Love to see young players getting a chance but bit too much last night. I really hope Jayden Onen does well and has a good career but you can imagine the call he had with his mum last night.
Jayden: 'Hi mum, I played for the first team tonight for the first time ever.'
Mum: 'That's fantastic, I'm so proud of you. How did you get on?'
Jayden: 'I got booked by the referee before I touched the ball.'
Mum: 'Oh.'

Watch the replays, particularly the one behind the goal which shows that he clearly launches himself into the air. Why did he do that rather than shoot? Because he had taken a poor touch and was struggling to get the ball back under control in time. Also Rafael was well positioned.

Rafael 7 - some decent saves
Holmes 6 - did OK, but we need a proper RB in
Morrison 6
Moore 6
Gibson 6 - did quite well, but made the error for their second goal
Laurent 7
Rinomhota 5
Aluko 6 - wasn’t doing tons but shouldn’t have been taken off so soon
Olise 6
Ejaria 6
Semedo 5 - he was poor but he was clearly out of his depth as a striker
Baldock 5 - should have started. No threat off the bench
Esteves 5

A couple of errors cost us bad and we were unsurprisingly rather toothless without any actual goalscorers and strikers playing.
We competed pretty well with a very strong Norwich side and bar the error driven goals they didn't actually get much change out of our back line.
Got to learn to play a different way with Baldock. Also frustrating we put as many, if not more, crosses in than when we've had a striker capable of getting on the end of them. Crosses with that starting line up are pointless. Needed to test the keeper and try to pepper shots at him, because we sure as hell weren't going to be winning any headed shots on goal with Aluko, Semedo, Olise and Ejaria as the attackers.
Overall disappointed, but pleasantly surprised.

To play devil's advocate and mentioned elsewhere - there were few complaints from the team and Moore could be clearly seen on one close up saying "Sorry boys" as they set up for the penalty. He knew he had screwed up.

7 Rafael, Laurent, Holmes, Olise
6 Moore, Gibson, Esteves, Baldock
5 Semedo, Aluko, Rino, Morrison, Ejaria
We tried hard but looked toothless. Couldn't get and keep possession in good areas, esp in the second half, and the relatively poor performances from Ejaria, Semedo, Aluko and Rino a big part of that. We needed to have better possession closer to their goal and force more free kicks, corners etc. Obvs Norwich have real quality in the middle - Skipp and Buendia are just simply Prem quality players playing down a level. Aarons is likewise and have Ejaria and Gibson a hard time.
Norwich knew what they were doing, pressed the midfield well, gave no space to Olise (who did well despite that) and to be honest looked a better side than us. I'd loved to have played them with Swift, Joao, Meite and Richards available mind you, and the balance may have turned.

Think thats harsh on Semedo - he's not a lone striker or wherever he was played as last night and where he's been played since being here. He's a half decent footballer but I personally wouldn't be playing him as much as Pauno is. He seems to see him as a real utility player - I think he's far more limited.

On a negative note we might struggle against some lesser sides in the coming weeks,Luton , Huddersfield, Coventry and Preston (both of whom we have already lost against when putting out our first eleven) unless the walking wounded return and/or we make a couple of signings of players good enough to come straight into the side.
Apart from games against the above we also have to play Brentford twice, Swansea and Bournemouth so we do really need to be stronger and not have to use Aluko, Baldock and Esteves, none of whom unfortunately bring enough to the team.
Their first goal last night had nothing to do with the injuries, it was yet another punished unforced error and Norwich had already come close after our normal (of late) slow start.
We really do need to find a safer way of playing out from the back-our defensive players and keeper are not great on the ball so if we keep on doing it we will continue to give goals away.
I should think Jason Tindall was laughing to himself in the studio when we cocked up-he knows that if our defence is pressed they will concede-and that's when we actually already have the ball!!
There was little that the manager could do last night taking into account the personnel and presumably on Saturday it will be the same on Saturday-run about a lot and hope for the best.
Maybe with goal kicks we will start to go long-it's far less dangerous giving the ball away in the opposition half than it is in and around our box-after all, what tends to happen is that we fiddle around for a while and then Morrison or Moore still hits the ball long and we lose possession having run the risk already of giving it away close to our own goal.
So, from a safety aspect let the keeper hit the ball long.

Araruna looked like a useful deputy for Yiadom, good delivery. And Holmes has largely done well, while neither Gibson nor Esteves have been disastrous. Three or four specialists seems about normal?
Esteves wasn't chosen last night, neither Holmes or Gibson are full backs, and Araruna was billed as a defensive midfielder when he joined. So as it stands we don't have a specialist in the squad in full back position deemed good enough for the first team, as I said.

IMHO
Rafa 8 I disagree with some comments,he pulled off two top class saves from point blank range.Easily our best player.
Holmes 5 It wasn’t all bad and he was actually reasonable going forward. The coaching team need to work on his positioning.
Gibson 4 Started ok ,then got rinsed.
Morrison 6 Not too much wrong, but not up against a CF.
Moore 5 Very mixed, performance ,got lulled into the dive.
Rino 4 Marked him down for that stupid pass.
Laurent 6 Had a very difficult game and his lack of mobility was exposed.
Olise 7 Some poor judgement at times, but clearly our only creative spark.
Ejaria 6 Normal service really.Looks dangerous but no end product.
Semedo 4 Feel sorry for him .We had to play him totally out of position.
Alukho 6 There is always that threat of a match winner.Should have been left on.
Estevez and Baldock Oh dear.
Ondine Very unlucky with the booking. The Ref clearly thought it was about time I booked someone, anyone.
Hey again a very poor ref.To give him the benefit of the doubt he might have thought there was a slight touch on the pen However the dive was a give away. The foul on Ejaria on the edge of the box was a much clearer foul by Norwich. How did Pukki get away with no booking? Also McLean ? I really give up on these guys.Never mind Keith Stroud on Saturday.Wince.

On the game, I couldn't fault the effort of the players last night but we were just so blunt, lacked any penetration at all which was no surprise given we had a false number 9. I was lucky to be one of the 2,000 there and I thought the first half was pretty even. Second half Farke's tactical change won them that in my opinion. The penalty was clumsy, probably a fair result even though it wasn't a penalty.
We had a lot of the ball, we just couldn't get into those dangerous positions enough. Like another poster said, maybe we should have tried winning more set pieces. Maybe something we can try at Brentford on Saturday.
Ratings:
Rafael - 8

When we signed Araruna, Bowen described him as “a really bright, young talent who can play in two or three different positions…right-back, on the right side of midfield and as a defensive central midfielder.” At this point I think it’s fair to count him as a full back.
Similarly, Gibson was signed as fifth-choice centre back and second choice left back.

That's a bafflingly one sided look at it.
Araruna came as a midfielder who could play RB and has since made virtually all his appearances at RB and looked good there.
Holmes, the odd mistake aside, has done really well. Gibson, the odd mistake aside has done well too and we brought him in primarily as LB cover (hence McIntyre getting the nod at CB ahead of him initially when Moore was out).
We have no dedicated fullback cover beyond Esteves, precisely because we have such good utility options to come in there if needed.
In fact our one dedicated fullback cover has probably been our worst player at fullback this season.

Think this is where I disagree. You hoof the ball up field towards Baldock, and they hammer a header back at our defence - thats more dangerous than us keeping possession imo.
You can play a longer ball game if you genuinely have players who will win the ball and hold it up - Joao can sometimes, but otherwise you are likely just giving the ball back to the oppo, and often in our own half.
I dont think either of the CBs lost possession often tbh. They actually hit some nice long balls as well, from a position between our box and the centre circle - as a result of passing it out.

After that they grew more into the game and being more effective with the flooded midfield and pretty much gave as good as they got. Norwich look very good going forward but aren’t overly anything special at the back but the lack of Joao and Meite meant there wasn’t really a lot with which to ruffle Norwich’s defence.
Ref wasn’t as bad as some but wasn’t brilliant either, really should have booked Pukki for his continual foul play. The penalty was just one of those things, you’ve seen them given before and they’ll be given again. If had been the other way round most of us would probably have argued it was justified.
Reading just seemed to tire as the second half wore on and not having any real options on the bench to change things didn’t help that.
Laurent motm. Rafael did well with some class saves. Overall not too bad a performance considering the number of key players that are missing.
