Reading FC Match Report: 2023/2024 Season - League One
READING 1 DERBY 0
Reading: P Mukairu (54)
Derby: --
This was an outstanding performance against a top six side on good form. Reading played
with a confidence, expectation and belief that makes complete nonsense of their current
league position. The result and the valuable three points were thoroughly deserved. From
the first minute to the last Reading played with tenacity, determination and commitment, and
with a little more composure in front of goal might have won by a more convincing margin.
The winning goal came early in the second half when an Azeez strike cannoned back of the
upright and Mukairu hammered the rebound past County 'keeper Vickers.
The back four led by Tom Holmes set the tone in the opening phase of the game attacking
the ball with real conviction and winning a high percentage of tackles and headers. Reading
pressed well all over the pitch and were always looking to making it difficult for Debry to
mount any sustained pressure. Knibbs' contribution throughout the match was phenomenal.
He seemed to pop up everywhere, pouncing on any hint of hesitation from Derby to win
possession any loose balls in midfield.
Reading looked more threatening going forward and came close to taking the lead when
Azeez found Yiadom in the box who made room for a snap shot which came back off the
post. A glancing header from Smith drifted wide. Reading caused problems for the Derby
defence getting their crosses in early but were not quite sharp enough, or sufficiently
composed, in the box to take advantage of some promising situations. County failed to
register a shot on target in the entire match. Resolute defending all round and composed
passing in their own half kept restricted County to very few opportunities. The closest they
came to scoring was a long-range effort from Hourihane which clipped the outside of the
post just before half time.
County came into the game with high expectations of a win to take them to the top of the
league, so the reaction to falling behind was inevitable. A triple substitution and an attempt to
pin Reading in their own half only produced one good chance. John-Jules headed wide in
front of goal when it looked easier to score.
The match officials were, by any standard, extremely poor. Referee Drysdale was weak and
allowed the Derby players to intimidate him particularly when they were chasing an
equaliser. In the closing stages he even allowed a Derby player to manhandle him without
punishment. His bias (or incompetence) was clearly reflected in the match statistics.
According to Drysdale, Derby only committed only two fouls (yes that's right - two!) in the
entire match. Worth checking the Guiness Book of Records on that one! He was not helped
by one of his assistants who seemed incapable of seeing who put the ball out of play made a
string of clearly incorrect decisions.
Nevertheless, in spite of Derby's desperate attempts to save a point, Reading kept their
shape and looked dangerous when they counter attacked. Derby went down to ten men for
the last four minutes of stoppage time having used all five substitutes when John-Jules
limped off. There more than a little concern about Reading going down to ten men when
Mbengue replaced Yiadom and was booked for typically reckless challenge.
Ultimately this win was a great team performance built on some outstanding individual
contributions. Bindon hardy put a foot wrong all evening. Holmes and Smith lead by example
with their physical presence in key areas, and Knibbs contribution was, as I mentioned
previously, simply phenomenal.

A mention for the ref, I thought he did well despite giving 14 fouls to Derby compared to our 2, Derby's game plan seemed to be to win a free kick and nick a goal from a set piece, the ref resisted awarding a lot of soft fouls they played for. I did wonder why they seem to be programmed almost institutionally cheat, why steal 5yds with a free kick then take it short.
I thought Knibbs was MOTM, keeps running, harrying and stealing the ball, along with Wing and Craig we finally seem to have a midfield.

We really need another win as I believe 5 of our next 7 are away from home.
Not quite that bad, just 4 of the next 7 are away.
Reading's next ten fixtures.
Sat 03 Feb - Oxford United (a) - currently 6th
Tue 06 Feb - Stevenage (a) - currently 7th
Sat 10 Feb - Charlton Athletic (h) - currently 16th
Tue 13 Feb - Fleetwood Town (a) - currently 24th
Sat 17 Feb - Portsmouth (a) - currently 1st
Tue 20 Feb - Port Vale (h) - currently 18th
Sat 24 Feb - Shrewsbury Town (h) - currently 20th
Sat 02 Mar - Carlisle United (a) - currently 23rd
Sat 09 Mar - Wycombe (h) - currently 17th
After that there's still awkward trips to Bolton, Derby and Barnsley waiting.
4 of the next 6 though. Which after Sat will be 4/5 away.
Ideally out of those 6, we need 4pts min from Orient/Charlton. Win at Fleetwood and pick up a point or two in the others.
If we can get 9 or more points from that run, we should be right in the group. If we get a win on Saturday then we suddenly go to Oxford knowing we could jump up the table by quite a few spots with a win.

Why were you expecting a 3 point deduction? Has anyone been deducted 3 points for a single pitch invasion?
Because it wasn't just a pitch invasion. It was a deliberate act by our fans to get a game abandoned, and we've effectively got away with it unpunished.
I think the EFL were lenient, not wishing to seen as kicking us even more than they have already.

Need to be targeting the minimum of the above. 15-16 points (upper midtable form) from these games would get us out of the drop zone. Not sure I see us losing just 2 games but it is absolutely a favourable run in.
We may nick another away win somewhere (Carlisle or Fleetwood) and lose one of the home games. I think we could get a result at Oxford as well who are out of form.

We should be targeting wins at Fleetwood and Carlisle. Our away form has improved and they are 2 dire teams.
The next 3 are tough and I'd take 3 points happily, but even they're not as tough on paper as last night. After that it's a very winnable run of games except the trip to Portsmouth. My only concern is fixture congested and its toll upon the squad. Both Stevenage and Port Vale are rearranged games and our competitors will have more rest than us.

It could be that but it matches the precedence set when Blackpool fans got a game abandoned via a pitch invasion.

I'd have given it to Mukairu, Azeez is great going forwards but too often, IMO, fails to track back quickly enough and leaves our right back very exposed. Last night Yiadom and Mbengue quite often found themselves having to try to look after two players attacking down our right.

At the time I thought he'd done it because their new signing is really pacey and full of tricks. Mbengue is a lot faster than Yiadom and Yiadom was clearly tiring.
After the game Selles apparently said it was to manage Yiadom's fitness, having recently come back from injury.

A strange but entertaining game where I don't remember either keeper making a save which is rare in any game of football.
Having read a report of Derby's Saturday game away at Lincoln (0-0) I was quite optimistic about our chances as apparently Derby's man of the match in that game was the keeper and the manager said that without his performance they would have lost that game.
There was so much space in midfield last night that it looked as though there would be loads of goals but the posts prevented that and the only goal, calmly taken by Mukairu, came after Azeez's shot hit a post.
Last night showed that Craig has to play ahead of Savage and that Tom Holmes looks really strong when faced with little strikers.
Posters have said about Knibbs working hard but I felt Smith did even more-who would want to be a lone striker feeding off scraps in every game that you play?
So, on to Leyton Orient with hopefully greater confidence having beaten one of the top sides, although in this division the "top" all seem to be vulnerable and it is the luck of the draw as to when we get to play them.

Completely forgot about the game after a long day and did something else last night. Turns out I missed our best performance of the season apparently.
Not suprised to see Holmes getting plaudits. He was excellent at the start of last season, and he's had one bad game this season (Vale).
Very pleasant surprise this morning seeing if there was any takeover news and realising we'd played and won last night.

It was the most complete performance I have seen from us in a long time.
Holmes was great and it’s brilliant to see him looking so confident. It’s a shame we can’t sign him permanently.

If he can play a key role in keep us up this season and then push on at Luton next year, whatever division they're in, then that's a great outcome.

You mean it was a pitch invasion with exactly the same motivations and objectives as that carried out by the Blackpool fans a while back?
They got a fine (little point with us when the owner doesn't pay them and we are in dire financial straits) and a home game behind closed doors (suspended punishment) from the FA whom I assume still have to adjudicate on our abandonment.
The Football League hit them with a three point deduction suspended for two seasons.

Entirely agree - I thought the ref had a really good game, letting things flow and only blowing up for the really blatant fouls.
I was a little worried when he called Mbengue over in the second half but sensibly gave him just a talking to - but what happened at the end when he was manhandled by the Derby chap?
And a word for the linesman who was alert enough to catch Derby offside several times in the first half even if he also caught Smith in the second half!
