Reading FC Match Report: 2017/2018 Season - Championship
READING 3 BARNSLEY 0
Reading: D Edwards (20), J van den Berg (29), J Dadi Bodvarsson (88)
Barnsley: --
Reading continued their recent good run of results with a convincing three goal win at home to climb into a more comfortable mid table position. Edwards gave the Royals the lead on twenty minutes with a glancing header from a Kelly corner whipped in at the near post which surprised 'keeper Davies with its pace and power. It forced Barnsley to commit more players to attack giving Reading more time and space to add to their lead. Joey van den Berg added a second goal nine minutes later with a thunderous strike from outside the box. Barnsley posed more of a threat in the second half following three half time substitutions but Bodvarsson put the result beyond doubt two minutes from time heading home the rebound from a Popa strike which came back off the bar.
As in recent games were trying to get the ball forward with greater urgency and their running and passing was sufficiently direct to unsettle the visitors. Aluko found room to get a shot away inside the box in the early in the game but under pressure he missed the target. Aluko and Barrow were prepared to take players on and some promising attacks did not quite come off but overall it was an enterprising start to the game. Edwards goal after twenty minutes was just what Reading needed to get a foothold in the game and when Joey van den Berg burst through from the halfway line he was looking for passing options before he realised there were none and settled for lashing the ball into the net from 30 yards out to increase their lead. Again Davies got a hand to it but the power and pace of the strike was sufficient to beat him. Reading were dominant and might have added more goals before half time. There were glimpses of goal for Barrow, Aluko and Kelly on the edge of the box but they did not follow van den Berg’s example and hesitated and the opportunity passed. Kermorgant broke down the left latching onto a Barrow pass and delivered an outstanding pass to Bacuna arriving in to penalty area with a well-timed run. Bacuna struck his volley well but just wide of the far post.
Barnsley manager Heckingbottom realised drastic action was required to prevent a rout and made three changes at half time. The impact was immediate as his team won two free kicks in dangerous positions around the Reading penalty area. Barnsley were far more enterprising following the changes and with Reading making some careless mistakes in their own half threatened to get back into the game. Bodvarsson replace a tired looking Kermorgant early in the half and had a significant impact on the game giving Reading’s attack more of a cutting edge. Barrows’s pace on the left wing looked likely to produce something for Reading on the break and another goal seemed inevitable. Aluko was set up by Barrow but once again he was unable to keep his composure sufficiently to find the contact required to tuck the chance away. He was soon to be replaced by Popa who looked full of energy, pace and enthusiasm. Moore came close to increasing the lead with a run and strike which hit the inside of the post and flew across goal and away to safety. Up at the other end more sloppy defensive play created a chance for Barnes to hit the post. With time running out Reading worked a short corner releasing Popa to smack a shot against the bar. Bodvasson reacted smartly to head home the rebound. It gave the scoreline Reading deserved and an equally deserved clean sheet for Manone.
The biggest disappointment of the evening was the low attendance and a lack of appreciation of the progress made by Stam’s talented squad. Stam made it clear in his post-match comments he is fully aware of the negativity coming from some fans and the local media. He was the first to admit there was room for improvement today but a bit more encouragement and enthusiasm from fans and media might help maintain and accelerate the upward trajectory which is certainly increasingly evident in recent games. Over half of this season’s goals (twelve out of twenty-three) have been scored in last six games producing three wins, two draws and one defeat (against the league leaders). Surely that form is cause for optimism not scepticism.

Liked what we did in the first half, but could do with a bit more urgency in our play, scored from a corner and a 25 yard scorcher from Joey after he was allowed a 20 yard dribble and unchallenged shot. https://twitter.com/TalkReading/status/ ... 9487349761
Got a bit sloppy in the 2nd half and maybe would have been punished by a better side. but I felt we were playing within ourselves.
Maybe 7 all round as far as the marks go but a shout out for Bodvarsson, hes just what we need holds it up decent in the air and works hard.
3 home wins, all under the lights, bring on Cardiff.

I'm frustrated we didn't win by 5 or 6 but a wins a win. I think we look a nailed on midtable side.
Mostly 7s across the board and Barrow my MoM. 2 clean sheets in a row too

I quite enjoyed it. First half, Barnsley sat off us we were able to pass through them and the movement was decent. Barnsley looked toothless and no surprise they made 3 subs at the start of the 2nd half.
Second half our midfield went missing and we really struggled to keep the ball but we still created at least 2 very good chances to make it 4. Barnsley could have got one back until JDBs header.
So yes disappointing yet a decent win.

Thought Joey was excellent first half. A couple of crunching tackles to get things going, and was finding space with good movement and some nice touches. Deserved his goal and great to see that beautiful smile of his.
Bodvarsson looked fresh and sharp when he came on, and he's surprisingly quick. Bacuna, Barrow and Edwards also had good games. And I thought Fryers looked decent for them.

3-0 Barnsley
0-0 Sheffield Wednesday
2-2 Bolton Away
0-2 Wolves
4-2 Derby Away
3-1 Forest
P6 W3 D2 L1 12-7 11 Points

“86.33 Season”
While it is too early to say we have turned the corner, two wins, two draws against mid table sides and an average of 1.5 ppg against two top six sides and a ppg that would normally make the playoffs with ease suggests things are more than on track.

Barnsley were poop but credit to us for making them look so poor. I think they look to counter attack much like we do and we played quite deep to stop them doing that which led to a slightly odd game
We did look pretty dangerous coming forward and Jon Dadi was excellent and my motm
Edwards was particularly good first half, defence looked Solid but I thought Moore had a dodgy second half
No real complaints though. Evening matches are more fun that Saturday games
3 more points Saturday please

As I recall, since 2014's 4-2 win at Leeds Reading have managed just 1 midweek league away win from about 20 games or so.
As the game. a great win tempered by a mediocre, at best, performance. Think Reading had an opportunity to go for it but instead just opted to defend the 2-0 lead rather than carrying on with trying to get forward.
But, to be honest, if Reading do that every week and win who cares?

My take on the reason we defended the lead was more the fact we didn't want to get caught on the counter, whilst we were still looking quite dangerous on the counter ourselves.
That or we were just knackered

It felt like watching some League Cup game against Newport or Accrington.
Joey was immense first half of first half, and was still my MoM at half-time. I like Edwards. I think these should be a pairing away to stop other sides playing
Aluko, Bacuna, Barrow are a step up in class for us, esp in ball-skills. Some of their tricks are superb. In a winning side they will rip teams apart. I understand why people want Bacuna in midfield (a step up in class on Williams IMO) but while it's working at RB (and Gunter looks better at LB/LWB than on the right) maybe we should stick with it? Gunts was quiet, I thought.
Yan still looks a shadow of last year, ditto Kelly who likes tired and unfit. If he walked slower to the corner flag for corners he'd be walking backwards. What is it with that?
McShane was McShane but Moore had a below-par performance by his standards. Interesting that while defensively we didn't stand out, we kept a clean sheet.
I thought Dadi looked very much more threatening than Yan. He should start at Sunderland instead of Yan, but it sounded like JS is looking to play the same team.
Our last six games including two tops six sides and we have averaged 1.833 points per game. As yet we aren't really gelling, I lost count of the number of misplaced passes. BUT we were trying things, and very soon it is going to click, the confidence will ratchet up a few more points and I think we will play with at least top six form in the second half of the season. (I don't mean MAKE the top six, I mean better than 38 points, possibly a lot better).

Pretty much 100% agree with that. Joey was immense first half in midfield but I just don't like him in the back 3 as he was in the 2nd. I get why Stam changed to 3 at the back when Barnsley started to throw caution to the wind but would have preferred Illori to come on and fulfil that role as he did in the last 10 minutes .
There's no question we're carrying Kermogant at the moment. It's clear Stam is aware of this but is hoping he will reach the heights of the 2nd half of last season. I have my doubts but can see the logic. He was pivotal last season but the difference when Bod came on was obvious.
On the face of it Kelly would seem a natural back up in the "Swift Role" . In reality it never seems to work particularly well. He did ok in general but seems timid in the final 3rd. Things don't always work for Swift but he has the courage of his convictions to try something that Kelly doesn't.
I still feel there is plenty more to come from Barrow, Bacuna and Aluko. The first two are playing well but you can see they still have a lot more to offer. I don't know if its the transfer fee putting extra pressure on him but Aluko isn't quite right atm. There's obvious flashes of how good he could be but the end product isn't there yet.
Have to say I was disappointed with Barnsley. They've actually been one of the more enjoyable teams to watch in the last season and a half but sacrificed their usual front foot style and tried to sit back (as many have successfully done to us recently tbf). It simply didn't work for them.

Agreed with others that JDB worked extremely hard and showed some decent pace and deserved his goal.
Bacuna again, was excellent. Can’t help but feel he’s wasted at right back. He could really drive the midfield.

I am no great fan of Joey but credit him with taking advantage of Barnsley backing off so he chanced his arm and it worked.
Having already backed Burton for relegation I have just backed Barnsley as well at a standout 9/4 with Bet 365.
As vision said, Barnsley have always been a decent footballing side to watch and normally win enough games to have no relegation worries (a bit like Crewe) but they seem to have lost that and following recent defeats look to face an uphill struggle especially if Sunderland get in the habit of winning games (but preferably not this Saturday).
Vision also said about Kelly now being a bit timid when he gets around the opposition box which is a bit of a mystery as he was the only one scoring goals early on this season so you would expect his confidence would be sky high.
Maybe being in and out of the side both for not being selected and because of injury he has lost confidence and that bit of a swagger that he had previously-hopefully he will get it back.

But it was boring. We had three shots on target and three goals. There was little goal mouth action. Unlike many around me in the crowd last night who were willing the team to lose so that Stam would get fired I really WANT him to succeed. It seems to me that last season he instilled a winning mentality in the team - apart from when we lost a early goal and then we often got thrashed because we could not defend. This season the defense is much better but we have not learnt how to move the ball forward effectively. I am hoping that if Stam is here next season (as I doubt we can do much better than half way now this time) that the players can learn to BOTH defend AND attack effectively.
There is still far too much pointless passing around in their own half and often when we break forward the move is negated by a series of backward passes all the way to Mannone. On a couple of occasions JDB held the ball up brilliantly but no one got into the box to support him and he had no choice but to go backwards. Stam really needs to find a way to address this or I fear that crowd numbers will continue to drop irrespective of whether we win or lose.
It feels odd to be so critical when we won 3-0 but the football was not engaging last night which is why I assume the crowd were so quiet. To me Arsenal are the best exponents of passing football but in an engaging way. Obviously sometimes they are stopped by a defensive opposition but over the years they have been generally good to watch. Our players are obviously not as good as Arsenal's but somehow Stam needs to create more excitement if we are to persist with this passing style.
Having said that I was impressed with his interview on BBCRB. He seemed to pretty much agree with most of what I am saying above and even said the players were very disappointed with the performance and so I still have hope of better things to come.

Excellent Cameo from Bod and I thought Pops looked lively when he came on. Should get more pitch time IMO.
Player ratings:
Manone: 6- Tidy and rarely threatened
Gunter: 6- A very Gunter like performance
Moore: 7- Could have been a 8 but not quite his usual high standard
McShane: 6- Solid, but a little shaky in possession
Bacuna: 8- Linked up superbly with Sone and kept his winger very quiet
Joey: 7- Very good display interspersed with a couple of sloppy passes. Great goal too.
Edwards: 7- Did nothing wrong, but didn't notice him much. Well taken goal though
Barrow: 8- MOTM Electric pace and some outrageous bits of skill at times
Aluko: 7- Decent attacking play but I still think he's not quite hit top form
Kelly: 5- Poor Liam looks well off the pace and a bit pi$$ed of tbh. Think Japp needs to give him a cuddle!
Kermorgant-: 6- Still looking to get his full sharpness back but second half of last season was where he hit form so I'm hopeful
Subs:
Bod: 7- Excellent work ethic and great reactions for his goal
Popa: 6- Looked to be trying too hard understandably but good involvement for our third goal
Thiago: 6- No worrying lapses so that's an improvement!

JDB played excellently when he came on his runs create so much space for Barrow and Aluko to run into and he keeps CB's much more occupied than Kermy who looks to have lost a yard of pace and isn't quite as effective in the air this year as last year but it took him a while to get firing and his front post defending is exceptional for Reading at set pieces.
Really disappointed with Kelly who looks uninterested, doesn't want to win the ball and his passing has been poor needs a wake up call to prove he is worth his run of games. Edwards looked better last night although sometimes allows opposition to pass him to easily and Mcshane still is not filling me with confidence.
Lastly respect to Popa for running his heart out for about 5 minutes before getting tired and then getting an assist, looks fat and unfit and I would largely suggest this is why he's been out the picture, still quicker than Beerens tho so fair play.
