Reading FC Match Report: 2019/2020 Season - Championship
BLACKBURN 4 READING 3
Reading: J Swift (15), S Baldock (64), Y Meite (68)
Blackburn: B Brereton (3), A Armstrong (6), J Rothwell (56), S Gallagher (87)
This may have been a meaningless end of season fixture but it was not lacking in entertainment value. Twice Rovers let a two goal lead slip before finally sneaking a goal near the end to win the game which could have gone either way. This was a complete contrast to recent Reading performances in which they have been solid defensively and struggled to score goals. Today the Royals back line gave Rovers so much space and time in front of goal they found themselves two goals down after six minutes and in the second half they ran Rovers ragged at the back coming back to three-all and might easily have scored the winner. Sadly it was Rovers who took all three points with a Gallagher header three minutes from the end.
Rovers started with an intensity that caught Reading cold. They were direct and penetrating with their passing and movement, and generally quicker in every aspect of the game. Brereton took advantage of the absence marking or pressing to score the first for Rovers. Armstrong given the same time and space added a second for Rovers three minutes later. It had the makings of a slaughter. Reading however shook off the appalling start and gained a foothold on the game when Rinomhota was fouled (a feature of the game) just outside the box and Swift struck the resulting free kick superbly into the top left corner. McIntyre sustained a head injury before half time and was replaced by Moore shortly before the interval.
Reading came out on the front foot in the second half but Rovers restored their two goal advantage after fifty-six minutes with a goal from Rothwell. It was the cue for Mark Bowen to make radical changes bringing on Baldock, Obita and McCleary in place of Richards, Blackett and Puscas. The changes had an immediate effect. Sam Baldock made more impact on the game in ten minutes than Puscas has in the last dozen games. He first pass set up Olise with a great chance on the edge of the box which was wasted. His second involvement was to head in Reading’s second goal from a delightful Obita cross at the near post. Then four minutes later he picked up a pass in the box, sat the defender down, and clipped over a perfect cross for Meite to head in the equaliser. Rovers did not know what had hit them. Then came one of those ridiculously unnecessary drinks breaks and Reading lost a bit of momentum.
It was Rovers turn to re-shuffle the pack and refresh their line up three substitutions. Their changes did not have the same impact and the game ebbed and flowed as both teams fancied their chances of scoring the winner. McCleary looked dangerous on the right with his acceleration taking him past the full back but Reading could not find the crucial finish. That honour went to Gallagher heading in at the far post from a Chapman cross. A stronger challenge from Obita might have prevented the goal. Reading did not have sufficient time to come back again but they had at least given it a good shot in the second half of a very entertaining game, even if ultimately it was a disappointing result.

IMHO
Rafael 6 Terrible kicking. But realistically had no chance with any of the goals.
Gunter 6 Solid enough. One very good pass, playing in Rino.
Blackett 5 The worst of Blackett, apart from a couple of meaty tackles.
Morrison 4 Apart from one very good clearance, completely out of his depth.
McIntire 5 Got shown up against a very clever attacking team.
Richards 4 Played out of position and never in the game.
Rino 4 Looked very limited today.
Swift 5 Brilliant free kick, but so often went for the difficult pass, but then would screw up an easy pass.
Olise 6 Good and bad in equality measure.
Puskas Never got a decent pass ,never in the game.Cant rate him really.
Meite 5 Usual blunderbuss.Yes it was a pen on him late on.
Obita Pity really after that cross to Baldock, but eventually gave them the game by being far to weak on the back post.
Baldock Apart from that overhead kick, his best game.Nice goal.
Moore Looked like someone on his way.
Osho Bit of a mixed bag.
Macca That zip has gone. Also looked like someone on his way.
Ref.Apart from the pen on Meite had a pretty reasonable game.

Gunter - 6 typically Gunter
Morrison - 6 less good than normal
McIntyre - 6 struggled a bit during the period of no protection then went off injured
Blackett - 5 all over the shop
Rinomhota - 6 not at his usual level, but pretty much running midfield alone at times
Swift - 5 good goal but back to last season's liability in defence and consistently poor passing as normal since the restart
Olise - 6 bit soft but grew into the game at the end as the rest of the team improved
Richards - 5 rather headless chicken
Puscas - 4 get involved
Meite - 4/6 looked lost alongside Puscas, far better when Baldock came on
McCleary - 6 didn't quite happen, but more direct and helped change the game
Baldock - 7 upped the tempo, scored and created. Went quiet later on but we'd lost the flow at that point
Obita - 5 given time and space a beautiful cross, but beaten on the back post for the winner. Possibly harsh here.
Moore - 6 ish, he's just not a midfielder but didn't get much wrong, did fine in defence
Osho - 6 did ok
All in all an entertaining goal fest that could so easily have been a rout or a win. Good character on display, shame about some of the quality.

I'm done with Obita though. Hope he doesn't get a new contract. That 4th goal was dire and bar a cross today he's really not done much or shown the quality required for this league since his injury. Time to say thank you and goodbye.
Based on the post Covid performances we seriously need to wheel and deal smartly this summer. Every signing we make has to have a positive impact or we'll be in another relegation scrap next season. No surprise at the defeat and performance! Disappointing to gift Blackburn 4 goals.
Looking forward to a clear out of the shit overpaid players in this team and starting afresh with some hungry and ambitious players.

In summary:
Had no idea why he (and the others were frozen out of the team)
Gomes said how good he was on leaving, although having frozen him out for months
Hopes to be here next season
Club has a lot of issues. Seems to be very "different" behind the scenes compared to other clubs.
Manager is not under pressure to pick team

This will relate to our 'super agent' and terms of contracts. The signing of Araruna is an example but most relevant to Baldock and his comments is the constant selection of the other (frequently disappointing) striker ahead of him. The one I don't expect to be at the club next season.

Compare that to our big signing star player Lucas João who looks to be absolutely critical to us and the way we play and still it looks like he won't be fit for some time and clearly wasn't fit when we signed him and I doubt we will see him again for the start of next season. That hamstring "twinge" we were told about clearly was a load of crap.
I then see his record of injuries at Wednesday......the guy will never complete a season....he will never be fit.....
Just saying, but we desperately need a target man......give me a Sam Gallagher over a Lucas João anyday. That's all.

And what happened to Blackett today. Worst game since he came back into the side and just looked like he didn’t know whether he should be playing left back or left sided centre back; suspect having Richards in front of him running around like a headless chicken didn’t help either.

Tim wasn’t great today, and please no more Jem.Reasonable footballer, but I would rather listen to the weather forecast on the radio.

Doesn't sound a happy ship within the squad either. As a senior pro Baldock will be usefull to retain.
One wonders how much influence is excerted by Mr Yongge on affairs from afar. Nigel will just be a puppet pulling the strings he's directed too. A soul less place to work.

Bowen has a huge task this summer. There is so much dross to clear out but also the need to bring in players particularly at CDM and wingers where we are very light. We needed to finish the season with momentum. That hasn’t happened.

The trouble is we can bring in another manager but have the same recurring problems. What do you do then? Keep sacking the managers? It’s one of the reasons why we are in such a mess because no manager is given time to stamp their authority on the squad so we lack identity.
I’m far from convinced by Bowen but at least he is in a position to see what the problems are and try and do something about them this summer. So I think we should stick with him but we are going backwards and I think next season will be another struggle.

If a more distinguished Championship manager with a great Championship record becomes available/shows an interest in managing us we would be silly to not consider it. Bowen comes across as a very cheap, "yes man" option who the board/Kia Joorabchian can tell what to do. We need a proper manager imo who can do it in our league, someone of Gary Rowett's ilk just as an example.

Fingers crossed Mr G Potter gets the boot....or Mr Farke becomes available or Ainsworth gets his head turned......
I just think nothings gonna change and we will no doubt be looking for a new manager next December....maybe wrong mind.

Which available managers fit the bill and would be interested in coming to Reading? I always hear names mentioned but in reality they never end up becoming manager. Sometimes you have to stick with what you have and give the existing manager time.
